Amtrak Cascades train sees record ridership in Oregon in March
Amtrak says it experienced record ridership in Oregon this past March. The Amtrak Cascades saw 14,263 riders in March on the section of the route that runs between Eugene and Portland. That’s a 57% increase over the same month last year. It’s also the best month the route has had in its 30-year history.
Protestors set up camp outside Knight Library on U of O campus
EUGENE, Ore. – Students at the University of Oregon are among those at college campuses across the nation who are holding pro-Palestinian demonstrations. A protest camp popped up outside of the Knight Library on Monday morning with about 45 people initially and included students, faculty members, and members of the public and later grew to about 100 participants. Demonstrators say they will stay there, rain or shine, with demands that include the divestment of the university from companies that protestors say are profiting off of the attacks in Gaza. The protestors also want to see statements and actions from the U of O to affirm the safety of Palestinian, Muslim, Arab, and Jewish students.
Fatal Crash on Highway 101 in Tillamook County

City of Eugene plants 75 new trees in honor of Arbor Day
EUGENE, Ore. – The Emerald City got a little greener on Tuesday as the City of Eugene celebrated Arbor Day by planting 75 new trees, according to city officials. More than 50 city staff members, partners, and community volunteers helped plant new trees on April 30 in different locations throughout downtown Eugene. Mayor Lucy Vinis read a proclamation before work began in planting trees at locations that included West 8th Avenue, Pearl Street, and High Street and organizers said that planting the tree is an important step in bringing a feeling to the downtown Eugene area that’s been missing for some time. Eugene has earned the ‘Tree City’ designation for the last 45 consecutive years, but staff and community members have noted that the downtown area’s urban canopy is patchy.
