Eugene’s Whiteaker Neighborhood, known for its thriving community musicians, crafters, specialty providers and varied artists, has been named one of the top "urban havens" in the U.S.

The report produced by EasyCoops.com , a site hosting accessible construction plans for chicken coops and information on how to provide the best lives for backyard-raised chickens, ranked the Whiteaker Neighborhood as 81st on the list of America’s top 100 urban havens.

The communities that made the list all blend aspects of rural living like closely connected communities and access to fresh, locally produced foods with desires for slower paces of life and access to serene, natural landscapes. These places situated in between bustling cityscapes and vast rural areas make up many of the locations highlighted in this report and provide a stability that helps balance the benefits of both urban and rural lifestyles.

“It's clear that city dwellers are seeking a balance, craving the tranquility, access to fresh produce, and connection to nature that rural settings offer, while still appreciating the conveniences and opportunities of urban life,” Dave Malcolm, of EasyCoops, said in a press release.

“This blend of urban and rural preferences underscores the evolving aspirations of today's city residents.”

The Whiteaker neighborhood is flush with local businesses touting their own approaches to ventures that exemplify the eclectic spirit of a neighborhood known locally as ‘The Whit.’ This part of town also bears the nickname of benign Eugene’s ‘ Fermentation District ,’ with a number of breweries, distilleries and wineries nestled in amongst residential homes, art galleries and parks. Events like the Whiteaker Community Market — which is hosting its opening weekend for the season on May 5 —  provide artists and growers with an opportunity to sell their goods while residents can capitalize on access to locally-produced items.

For those seeking outdoor spaces, the WJ Skatepark and Urban Plaza provides 23,000 square feet of covered skate space for riders of all ages and skill levels. Pets and their parents can enjoy a dog park opened in March at Washington Jefferson Park and the west side of Skinner’s Butte provides a natural basalt wall called The Columns for responsible climbing.

    How was this report produced?

In generating this report, EasyCoops interviewed city-dwellers on the elements of rural lifestyles they find most appealing. Respondents appreciated natural landscapes, slower paces of life, reductions in stress, access to outdoor spaces and locally produced foods and more closely-knit communities and neighborhoods as their most mentioned aspects of rural living. To produce this report, EasyCoops conducted an online survey of 3,000 adults.

Portland’s Northwest/Nob Hill neighborhood was voted as the top urban haven in Oregon.
