A 'ghost ramp' to nowhere recalls the Freeway revolts of the 1960s
As car culture took hold in the 1950s, Eugene and Springfield leaders found themselves with a growing traffic problem . Their answer was ambitious: a limited-access freeway that would cut across the valley and bypass both downtowns. They called it the Roosevelt Freeway. Then, as now, traveling by motor vehicle required navigating stop and go traffic on two lane roads like Highway 99 , Main Street, and 11th Avenue . In 1956, President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed the Federal-Aid Highway Act and the Interstate Highway System was officially born later that year. Construction of Interstate 5 through Washington, Oregon and California, in disjointed chunks, began shortly after. In 1959, as part of that grand vision, officials proposed building a limited access east-west road that would connect with the new I-5 and link east Springfield with west Eugene. There was a problem however. Any route available would require demolishing portions of established neighborhoods, forcing residents and businesses to relocate. Construction of I-105 begins in Eugene-Springfield Despite opposition, construction moved forward on portions of the roadway. In 1960, the first section of U.S. I-105/Oregon Route 126 opened between Springfield and Eugene. Other sections were eventually added that linked Springfield near Main Street

City of Toledo Considers Traffic Calming Ordinance
The City of Toledo Planning Commission has reviewed policies and procedures for neighborhood-initiated requests for traffic calming devices and techniques that can reduce traffic volume and speed in neighborhoods. The proposed policies would establish a process that accepts a request and petition from neighbors, a safety review of the proposal, and ultimately, a decision if a traffic calming device will be allowed in a particular area, according to a release from the City of Toledo. "Traffic calming devices or “quick build” measures could include items such as speed humps, curb extensions, traffic circles, diverters, high visibility crosswalks, crossing islands, chicanes, speed cushions, or other intersection treatments," the release states. "The devices may be funded by those proposing the installation and are evaluated for effectiveness after six months of use" The draft ordinance and project information are available for review online at https://www.cityoftoledo.org/1497/Traffic-Calming-Ordinance The proposed ordinance will be reviewed at the Toledo City Council regular meeting scheduled for 6 p.m.July 15, at Toledo City Hall, Council Chambers, 206 N. Main Street, Toledo and through the Zoom video meeting platform. Meeting details are available at https://toledoor.portal.civicclerk.com/ For more information, contact the Planning Department at 541-336-2247 extension 2130 or email planning@cityoftoledo.org

Bike path detour avoids bridge construction
Construction work to replace the Waverly Drive bridge over Cox Creek could have blocked access to the Cox Creek walking trail and bike path, but it has not. On a ride Tuesday night, I noticed that the contractor has provided a handy detour for anyone traveling on the path to or from Simpson Park and the dormant Talking Water Gardens.

Eugene ranks No. 9 in report on cities with best drivers
Believe it or not, Eugene's drivers are pretty good. That's according to a new ranking from Allstate's 2026 America's Best Drivers Report, which put Eugene at No. 9 out of the 200 largest U.S. cities. According to Allstate, Eugene drivers go an average of 12.68 years between collisions – 1.82 years longer than that of the average U.S. driver. The Allstate America’s Best Drivers Report is in its 18 th year. Allstate analysts, who define a “collision” as any auto crash that results in a collision claim or property damage, created this year’s ranking with property damage claims data from January 2023 to December 2024. Which U.S. city has the safest drivers? Brownsville, Texas, led the ranking for the second year in a row with 14.99 years between collisions. At the other end of the spectrum, Boston took last again with 3.76. Its five closest neighbors also saw no movement from previous years. While Texas has three cities in the top 10, Massachusetts has the same number in the bottom 10. The years between collisions increased for each from the year prior. Eugene drivers crash less than Salem and Portland drivers Eugene, which rose one position from its rank as
