Outdoors: More deer found with chronic wasting disease in Ohio
Be on the lookout for changes in Ohio’s CWD regulations for deer in the upcoming 2024-25 hunting season. Further testing for chronic wasting disease in deer from the 2023-24 season and post-season deer removal in February and March turned up 27 more whitetails that tested positive, according to a Department of Natural Resources news release. The affected counties with positive samples were: Allen (1), Hardin (1), Marion (4), and Wyandot (21). “[The regulations] will be different but not much different than before,” said Brian Plasters of the Division of Wildlife. “We added townships and changed the dates for submitting the heads.”

State of mind: Mental health remains a high priority following pandemic
Anxiety and depression have become offshoots of the pandemic, according to mental health experts in Ohio and Michigan. A Household Pulse Survey by the U.S. Census Bureau reports that about 32 percent of adults in the nation reported symptoms of anxiety or depressive disorder in February of 2023. While Michigan's rate was the same as the national average, Ohio saw a slightly higher rate at 35 percent. That number rises to 50 percent if the age range is narrowed to 18 to 24. “We are still seeing a syndrome of stress. It is pretty clear we have a population that has experienced a shared trauma,” said Dr. Vincent Caringi, who specializes in child and adolescent psychology at Cleveland Clinic. “One of the things we know for certain is that access (to services) is not what it should be. There are not nearly enough beds available in the state.”
