Providence teachers protest over 13 schools with heat, safety issues

PROVIDENCE – After school on Wednesday, Nov. 4, Elijah Guzman joined his teachers from Hope High School in a protest in front of the school district's administrative offices. All day, his classrooms had either been "bone-cold" or "sweating" hot, Guzman said. Some of his friends have been absent from school because the freezing classrooms have been "causing students to get sick." Elijah's story was one of many shared by teachers, parents and officials from across the district echoing the same refrain: ongoing heating, maintenance and safety issues in Providence Public Schools are reaching a breaking point . The Providence Teachers Union reported that 13 Providence schools experienced heating outages last week alone. "It feels like a civil rights issue," said Jessica Pollard, a speech and language pathologist at Nathanael Greene Middle School whose own classroom was "absolutely freezing" last week, she said. "We deserve better, our children definitely deserve better. "If this was my child
