'The Ten Commandments,' 70 years old, has this North Jersey connection

Pompton Lakes is not the Red Sea. And North Jersey is not North Africa — where Cecil B. DeMille and his cast of thousands restaged the exodus from Egypt, on location, in his supreme blockbuster, "The Ten Commandments." Yet the fingerprints of New Jersey are all over the 1956 movie classic, which celebrates its 70th anniversary on Nov. 8. "The Ten Commandments" is one of the few old Hollywood movies that still command a following today: On ABC it is still a prime-time holiday tradition during the Passover season. It was in the pews of the original Christ Episcopal Church that DeMille would have first heard the story of Moses, the Pharaoh of Egypt, the enslaved children of Israel, the parting of the Red Sea, and the giving of The Law. Possibly even from the mouth of his own father, Henry de Mille — a lay preacher there. "I can remember going Sunday after Sunday to church with my father and listening to him preach," DeMille said in one interview. This NJ pasta shop makes 10,000 ravioli a week the old-fashioned way

Flour. Water. Egg. It starts simply, said Dominick Discenza. Building on those three ingredients with "only the best" in cheeses, meats, spices, herbs and oils is the key to Discenza and his family-run L&D Sapore Ravioli & Cheese in Middlesex. For more than 55 years, the Discenza family has shared Italian traditions, family recipes and fresh pasta through its deli and pasta shop. The shop was recently named to Yelp’s 2026 list of the Top 100 Pasta Places in the U.S. Like many of the pasta shops on the list, Sapore's roots run deep into Italian territory, with chef-owners who hail from traditional pasta makers. Many learned the craft from their families with recipes handed down from generation to generation. At Sapore Ravioli, the story begins in the small village of Baranello, Italy. Dicsenza learned to cook while watching and working with his grandparents before he came to the U.S. at age 12 with his family. They would get milk from the cows, make it into mozzarella.
