Fire Shuts Down Traffic on E. Second Street in Downtown Scotch Plains
SCOTCH PLAINS, NJ -- A fire at a building under demolition on E. Second St. between Myrtle Ave and Park Ave closed traffic on the artery around 1 p.m. on Tuesday afternoon. Fire officials said that the building, the former home of The Bike Stand, was in the process of being demolished when sparks from blow torches landed on dried wood and caught ablaze.CLICK HERE TO SIGN UP FOR THE FREE TAPINTO.NET NEWSLETTER Scotch Plains firefighters had the fire under control in about 45 minutes, according to officials. The activity impacted school pick up for parents whose children attend nearby Nettingham Middle School and School One. Workers escaped safely, and no one was injured. Crews were seen continuing with the demolition after the fire was extinguished. Scotch Plains police and Union County first responders also assisted at the scene of the fire.
