Nobody warned you that a trip to the Jersey Shore could feel like stepping into a time machine, but here we are.Silverball Retro Arcade in Asbury Park is the kind of place that rearranges your priorities in the best possible way.

Step inside a glowing arcade floor packed with classic pinball machines and retro shooting games ready for endless fun! Photo credit: Bernard L. Fontaine, Jr.

You go in thinking you’ll spend thirty minutes, and you come out two hours later blinking in the sunlight, wondering where the afternoon went and already planning your next visit. That’s not an accident. That’s what happens when someone builds something genuinely wonderful and puts it in one of the most interesting towns on the East Coast.Let’s start with the setup, because it’s one of the things that makes Silverball so immediately appealing. The arcade operates on a pay-to-play model, which means you pay one price for your time and then play as many games as you want during that period.Hundreds of vintage pinball machines and classic arcade games, all available to you, all day, for one flat rate.

Bally’s Star Trek and Kiss machines side by side, proof that 1979 had genuinely excellent taste. Photo credit: Mary Cosme

Think about that for a second.Hundreds of machines. All working. All yours. For one price. It’s the kind of deal that sounds too good to be true, but it’s completely real, and it’s one of the main reasons Silverball has built such a loyal following among both New Jersey residents and visitors from out of state. The pay-to-play model changes the entire psychology of the visit.

The original Atari Pong cabinet, still standing, still working, and still humbling people one round at a time. Photo credit: Toby Williams

There’s no mental math happening in the background, no calculating whether this next game is worth another token, no feeling of pressure to move on before you’re ready. You just play. You wander from machine to machine at whatever pace feels right, and you stay until you’re genuinely satisfied, which, fair warning, might take longer than you expect. The collection itself is the real star of the show.Silverball has assembled an extraordinary range of vintage pinball machines and classic arcade games, spanning from the earliest days of coin-operated gaming all the way through the peak of the arcade era.

The Simpsons, Disctron, and Defender lined up together like the greatest Saturday morning ever assembled in one room. Photo credit: Reed B

The machines are organized in rows, each one in working condition, each one with a small informational card posted nearby that gives you the history of that particular game.Walking through the collection feels like taking a guided tour through the entire history of an industry, except the tour guide is a steel ball bouncing off rubber bumpers, and the exhibits are all interactive. The informational cards are a genuinely thoughtful touch. They tell you who made each machine, when it was made, what made it notable, and sometimes a bit about the cultural moment that surrounded its release. It’s the kind of context that transforms a fun afternoon into something more meaningful. You’re not just playing games.

This vintage pitch-and-bat game is the kind of thing your grandfather played, and it’s still swinging. Photo credit: Anthony Caponigro

You’re connecting with a piece of American entertainment history, and that connection feels real because the machines themselves are real, working, and right in front of you.One of the most significant pieces in the collection is the original Atari Pong cabinet from 1972.It’s a yellow cabinet with two knobs and a small screen, and it displays the simplest video game ever made. Two paddles, one ball, a score.Nothing else. And yet standing in front of it, knowing what it represents, you feel the full weight of what this little machine started. The informational card near the Pong cabinet explains the history behind the game, including the legal dispute between Atari and Magnavox, which had released its Odyssey home console in 1972 with a tennis-style game included.

Eldorado Skee Ball lanes, tucked in and ready for action, because some rivalries never go out of style. Photo credit: Gershon Ackerman

The settlement that came out of that dispute helped define the rules of the coin-operated gaming industry for years to come. It’s a fascinating piece of history, and it’s right there on the Asbury Park boardwalk, still working, still waiting for someone to come play. The pinball machines are where most visitors spend the majority of their time, and it’s easy to understand why.The collection includes machines from legendary manufacturers like Bally and Williams, covering a wide range of themes and eras. The Bally Kiss machine from 1979 is one of the most visually striking pieces in the collection.

Chicago Coin’s Baseball Champ brings a three-dimensional ballpark to life in ways no smartphone app ever could. Photo credit: David Pickens

The cabinet features the iconic rock band in full face paint and platform boots, rendered in the bold, almost comic-book style that defined pinball machine artwork of that era. It’s loud and dramatic and completely wonderful. The Bally Star Trek machine, also from 1979, sits nearby with its blue and yellow cabinet and artwork that captures the spirit of the original television series with real enthusiasm. These machines are artifacts as much as they are games. They represent a specific moment in American pop culture, when pinball was the dominant entertainment technology and the artists who designed these machines were pouring tremendous creativity into every square inch of cabinet space. The artwork on vintage pinball machines is something that deserves its own appreciation, separate from the gameplay. Before video games could render detailed graphics on screen, all of that visual energy went into the physical design of the machines.

The Williams 1959 Rocket pinball machine, with artwork so vivid it practically launches off the playfield. Photo credit: Richard Guadagno

The result is this incredibly vibrant, almost psychedelic visual style that you simply don’t see anywhere else.Every machine is a little piece of graphic art history, and Silverball has hundreds of them lined up for you to explore. The Genie machine is another standout, with its rich golden tones and ornate artwork that looks like it was pulled directly from the pages of a fantasy novel.Walking past it, you slow down almost involuntarily, because the artwork demands a second look. That happens a lot at Silverball. You’ll be heading toward a specific machine and then get completely sidetracked by something you notice along the way. It’s a very pleasant problem to have.

A Williams Shuffle Inn bowler sitting by the window, quietly waiting to humble your entire family. Photo credit: Richard Rosenfeld

The setting adds another layer of magic to the whole experience.Silverball is located right on the Asbury Park boardwalk, which is one of the most storied stretches of coastline on the Jersey Shore.Asbury Park has had a long and complicated history, from its peak as a glamorous seaside resort to its years of decline and its remarkable revival as one of the most creative and vibrant communities on the East Coast.Today, the town is full of energy.Great restaurants, live music, art galleries, and a general sense of creative momentum make Asbury Park feel like a place where things are happening.Silverball fits right into that spirit. It’s a place that honors the past while remaining completely alive and relevant in the present.

This blacklight shooting gallery glows like a fever dream from 1974, and that’s meant as a compliment. Photo credit: Pat Errico

The combination of the ocean air just outside and the nostalgic sounds inside creates an atmosphere that’s genuinely hard to find anywhere else.Inside the arcade, the ambiance is warm and inviting.String lights run along the ceiling, giving the space a festive glow that makes everything feel a little more celebratory. The walls are painted in bold reds and blues, and the overall effect is energetic without being overwhelming. It’s the kind of place where you feel comfortable settling in and taking your time. And taking your time is very much the right approach. With hundreds of machines available, there’s no way to see everything in a single rushed visit. The best strategy is to wander without a plan, letting the machines catch your eye and draw you in.

A kid discovering shuffle bowling for the first time, wearing the focused expression of a future champion. Photo credit: Duncan McCarthy

Some people gravitate toward the earliest machines, fascinated by the mechanical simplicity of the pre-electronic era.Others head straight for the 1980s section, where the machines are more complex, more visually elaborate, and more likely to feature a licensed theme from a movie or television show. Both approaches are completely valid, and both will leave you with a list of machines you want to go back and play again. The experience works beautifully for all kinds of visitors.Kids who have never seen a pinball machine before are immediately captivated by the mechanical spectacle of the playfield.Watching a steel ball bounce off bumpers and ricochet through a series of targets is genuinely mesmerizing, even if you’ve seen it a thousand times before. For kids seeing it for the first time, it’s practically magic.

A vintage table soccer game that proves the beautiful game was always meant to be played indoors too. Photo credit: Tim Faustini

Teenagers who grew up on video games often find themselves genuinely challenged by the older machines. There’s no tutorial, no checkpoint system, no way to pause and look up a walkthrough. You figure it out or you don’t, and that kind of direct, unmediated challenge is actually refreshing.Adults who remember these machines from their own childhoods get something different from the experience. There’s a specific kind of joy that comes from finding a machine you played as a teenager and discovering that your hands still know exactly what to do.The muscle memory is still there, waiting.Your fingers find the flipper buttons, your body leans into the machine at the right moment, and for a little while, the years between then and now just sort of dissolve.

Somewhere between a carnival memory and a museum piece, this teacup ride is a genuine conversation starter. Photo credit: Help`a Brotherout

That’s a remarkable thing to experience, and it’s one of the reasons people keep coming back to Silverball. The staff contribute to the overall atmosphere in a meaningful way. They’re knowledgeable about the collection and genuinely enthusiastic about the history of the machines. If you want to know more about a particular game or manufacturer, they’re happy to talk, and their enthusiasm for the subject is contagious. It’s clear that this is a place run by people who genuinely love what they’ve built.Silverball is also a great option for group visits of all kinds.Birthday parties work well here because there’s something for everyone, regardless of age or gaming experience.

The party area at Silverball, where a neon “Party On” sign sets the only dress code that matters. Photo credit: Tim

Date nights work well because there’s a natural playfulness to the environment that makes conversation easy and laughter inevitable.Family outings work well because kids and adults can enjoy the same space in completely different ways and still have a great time. The flexibility of the pay-to-play model means that everyone can participate at their own level without anyone feeling left out or pressured. It’s a genuinely inclusive experience, which is rarer than it should be.Asbury Park itself rewards a longer visit, too.The boardwalk has plenty to explore beyond Silverball, including food, shops, and the iconic architecture of Convention Hall and the Paramount Theatre. The town has a creative, independent energy that makes wandering around feel like a genuine adventure.

Neon signs, ocean light, and a boardwalk address.
