A 23-year-old man died Wednesday afternoon following a crash involving a dump truck he was driving on Highway 29 in Napa Valley, the California Highway Patrol said.

The man was identified Thursday by Napa County Sheriff’s Office as Devin Brown of Santa Rosa.

A passenger in the dump truck also suffered major injuries in the crash, which took place at Manly Lane in Rutherford, according to CHP officer Gary Talaugon.

The crash was reported at 3:50 p.m. Brown was going northbound on Highway 29 when “for an unknown reason, he made an unsafe turning motion towards the right shoulder,” said Talaugon.

The 2016 International truck left the road and crashed into a concrete box and a metal guardrail. The truck overturned and continued until it crashed into a dirt and rock drainage culvert, Talaugon said.

The passenger, a 61-year-old man from Vallejo, was ejected and suffered major injuries as the truck came to a rest on its wheels facing south. Neither he nor Brown were wearing seat belts, Talaugon said.

The crash is under investigation,Talaugon said, adding that “at this time drugs and/or alcohol have not been determined to be a contributing factor in the crash.”

Northbound traffic on Highway 29 was diverted until the road was reopened at 7:30 p.m.
