MONTEREY COUNTY, Calif. (KION-TV) -- The CHP has shared more details about what led up to a deadly crash Friday afternoon.

Officers said at 4:44 p.m., a gray Mazda CX9 was heading east on Highway 68 near Spreckels Boulevard when the driver veered to the left and onto the grass median where it struck a sign. The Mazda continued traveling the wrong way into the westbound lanes where it hit a white Honda CRV head-on.

The driver of the Mazda was pronounced dead at the scene. He's been identified by the Monterey County Sheriff's Office as 64-year old Pascasio Contreras- Dominguez of Salinas.

The Honda's driver was taken to the hospital where she also died. The Monterey County Sheriff's Office has identified her as 52-year old Bridget Peterson, also of Salinas.

The CHP said it's unknown whether drugs or alcohol were involved in this crash.
