Sophomore QB, pair of pick-sixes lift Kennedy past Bettendorf
CEDAR RAPIDS — Kennedy Coach Brian White saw it pregame. His team looked primed for a big night. Boy, were they. Cedar Rapids Kennedy (5-3) played near-perfect football in a 37-0 rout of Bettendorf (5-3) on Friday at Kingston Stadium, keeping the Cougars’ playoff hopes alive. “I thought our kids were ready to play,” White said. “I could tell pregame, they just had a little edge about ‘em. We’ve talked about trying to play a perfect game. You’re never going to play a perfect game, but eliminate as many mistakes as possible. We were pretty clean the first half, especially offensively. And our defense had a shutout.” Leading 14-0 at halftime, Kennedy took command with pick-sixes by Adam Strasburger and Jack Hayes early in the third quarter. The Cougars’ defense forced four turnovers, including three interceptions of Bettendorf quarterback Cannon Davis. “You go out and get two pick-sixes … it was just a crazy chain of events to start the second half,” White said. “Our defensive coaches did a great job of putting a gameplan together. They’re good defensive coaches, and they put in something specific for this week. This kid’s (Davis) a great thrower — he leads 5A in

Fake punt helps send East Buchanan to the Class A District 4 title
WINTHROP — Caught off guard with that fake-punt call? You weren’t alone. “I wasn’t expecting that,” East Buchanan quarterback Keenan Pals said. “Our coaches never do that.” Never say never. On fourth-and-19, just before halftime, Trey Cornell raced 44 yards for a touchdown on a reverse out of punt formation, and sixth-ranked East Buchanan went on to defeat Maquoketa Valley 34-20 Friday night at Buccaneer Field. “(Assistant) coach (Justin) Shaffer … he’s a genius with what he comes up with,” Bucs Coach Jerry Alden said. “What he does for our offense is unreal.” The outcome — coupled with North Linn’s 28-0 win over Wapsie Valley — meant a Class A District 4 championship for the Buccaneers (7-1, 5-1). They’ll host a first-round playoff game here next week. The Iowa High School Athletic Association will reveal first-round pairings for 2A, 1A, Class A and 8-Player at 10 a.m. Saturday. This district houses four very good teams, all of which were tied for first place before Friday. East Buchanan was 3-5 last season and missed the postseason. “The work these seniors have put in … the biggest thing is the confidence we have,” Alden said. Enough confidence to call a fake punt

It’s all Cedar Rapids Jefferson in 42-6 win over Dubuque Hempstead
CEDAR RAPIDS — The first time, he had to have an assistant coach direct him to run behind his team’s bench to give celebratory fist bumps with fellow students in the front row at Kingston Stadium There was no such instruction needed for Bosco Mwanya the second time. He was on it. As was the entire Cedar Rapids Jefferson football team Thursday night at Kingston Stadium. Mwanya recovered a blocked punt in the end zone in the first half, then had a 68-yard interception return for touchdown in the second half of the J-Hawks’ 42-6 throttling of Dubuque Hempstead. After picking off that aforementioned Dubuque Hempstead QB Braylon Walker pseudo-pass (Walker was hit and the ball kind of squirted sideways), Mwanya sprinted untouched down the field and into the end zone, celebrated a little bit with teammates, then got to the sideline, where he ran to the stands and slapped hands with his classmates cheering him on. “Yessir,” Mwanya said. “That second one was different.” Running back Octavian Walton also got in on the student high-fives, as did backup quarterback Derek Robinson. They each had short touchdown runs in the second half. Like Mwanya, Tyree Turner got to slap hands

Opinion: The mailroom has become Grinnell’s boulder
It is Friday. It is 4:02 p.m. My last class of the day has just concluded. I cannot go pick up my package. After a weekend spent in solemn desire of the package wasting away in Red GB or Brown NF, I rush to the mailroom on Monday after lunch to find a line of dozens of other Grinnellians, each waiting for a piece of their home or a letter from a long lost love to be plucked off the shelves and brought to us. Waiting in that line, I wonder: Is this some sort of punishment from the universe? What have I done to deserve this?
