New superintendent balances duties in two school districts
MARENGO — Being superintendent of two school districts at the same time is new to Derek Philips, but with supportive school boards and communities, he’s figuring out the new concept. “It’s interesting,” said Philips, who took the reins of Iowa Valley and English Valleys School Districts this summer. Scheduling can be tricky, but Philips lets the staff know where he plans to be each day of the week. He always includes an asterisk and the words “subject to change.” Ultimately people don’t care where he is, said Philips. He’s available to both schools by phone and email if he’s not in the building. “I’m always available.” Though Philips has to spread his time between two districts, he still has to complete all the administrative duties for each one,. “It’s not 50/50. It’s 100/100,” said Philips. The road to Iowa County “I grew up in Van Buren County,” said Philips. He always knew he wanted to be a teacher. Though he had no family in education, two teachers inspired him to choose that vocation — fourth grade teacher Mark Church and math teacher Vicki Shepard. Tutoring during high school fed his decision to teach. He graduated from the University of Northern

The Warhawks headed into Week 7 with a tall task to win the district championship as West Hancock was attempting to defend their back-to-back district championships. Adding pressure to the night was a group of Warhawk seniors who have experienced three straight losses to the Eagles, being outscored by a combined 143-20 over the past three seasons.
