We had driven by this candy store dozens of times, but this time we made a beeline for Olivier’s because I really wanted to try their famous sponge candy. Word has it that this place is renowned for it. While it was the sponge candy that drew us there, we left with an armful of candy that was not on the shopping list.

CANANDAIGUA — Sure, Rochester celebrates St. Patrick’s Day in grand fashion with a parade and other festivities. But Canandaigua and Victor will be getting an early start to the holiday in their own way. The first Shamrock Shuffle, which is an event resulting from a partnership between Hotel Canandaigua Tapestry Collection by Hilton, Nolan’s Catering and several businesses near Canandaigua Lake, is scheduled for noon to 8 p.m. March 14. In Victor, three craft breweries are teaming up on a pub crawl from noon to 6 p.m. March 14. The Rochester parade is set to begin at 12:30 p.m. March 14. Shamrock Shuffle details at Hotel Canandaigua The celebration kicks off at noon with Bagpipes by Lex and Irish-themed entertainment by the Goodwin Academy of Irish Dance on the grounds of Hotel Canandaigua, 205 Lakeshore Drive. Nolan’s Catering is taking care of the traditional dinner, with corned beef, salt potatoes, baby carrots and a wedge of cabbage.
