REI presents scholarship to D.C. Everest student
WAUSAU – REI Engineering, Inc. announced this week it awarded a scholarship to a student at D.C. Everest Senior High School. The recipient, Samantha Johnson, D.C. Everest Senior High School class of 2024, will attend Madison College in the fall, where she plans to major in nursing to become a registered nurse in oncology and hematology. She will then continue schooling to become a nurse practitioner, but still in oncology and hematology.
Plea deal likely for man accused of stabbing Mosinee police officer
MOSINEE, Wis. (WSAW) - A 41-year-old man accused of stabbing a Mosinee police officer on Jan. 19 is scheduled to reach a plea deal in the case on July 2. Randy Beardsley is charged with battery to a law enforcement officer, substantial battery and resisting an officer. If a plea deal is reached, he’ll avoid a jury trial.

Wausau could nix humane officer under new animal control model
Wausau could eliminate its humane officer and shift those responsibilities to multiple part-time police employees, under a proposed animal control model under consideration. The Human Resources Department and Committee will examine the hiring portion of the proposal, after a recommendation earlier this week from the Public Health and Safety Committee. One alder on Public Health said he would like Ashlee Bishop, the city’s existing humane officer, retained under the new model. Bishop received a termination letter Monday, the same day as the committee meeting, with an effective date in October.
Wausau memorial park holding Memorial Day Remembrance program on Monday
WAUSAU, Wis. (WSAW) - We are looking ahead to Memorial Day events, and an annual one is happening again this year in Wausau to honor fallen soldiers. On Monday, hundreds of people will gather at Restlawn Memorial Park for their Memorial Day Remembrance Program. Guests will include the American Legion Dudley Post 10, and the Man of Honor Society. The guest speaker this year is Colonel David Monk. Every year in the park, there is the singing of the National Anthem, the Avenue of Flags, and a reading of names of those who died in service during the ceremony. The Man of Honor will also do a presentation on the History of the Armed Forces this year. The goal is to honor and remember the fallen soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country.

State, local campgrounds see Memorial weekend influx
WAUSAU, Wis. (WSAW) - A number of people will spend the weekend outdoors camping for Memorial weekend. The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources manages the State Park System and the campgrounds within it. State campgrounds are split into four regions. In the northeast region, which includes Wausau, there are 15 state-managed campgrounds. All of which, are full for Memorial weekend.

2 charged in large-scale meth trafficking scheme
WAUSAU, Wis. (WSAW) - A 33-year-old Weston man and 38-year-old Wausau man charged in a recent drug bust remain in the Marathon County Jail on high cash bonds. John Walker is charged with four counts including maintaining a drug trafficking place. Jonathan Stanke is charged with three counts including resisting an officer.
