Rifle City recognizes National Police Week
The city of Rifle met for a regular meeting last week. Among their agenda items came the recognition of National Police Week 2024, taking place from May 12 through May 18. The council said this is the 62nd annual recognition of Police Week, and approved the national salute to officers and law enforcement who put their lives on the line and honor the services they provide to the communities across the nation.
Data dashboard: Local rivers are running below average
Aspen Journalism is compiling a data dashboard highlighting metrics of local public interest, updated weekly. At Stillwater, located upstream of Aspen, the Roaring Fork River ran at 50.2 cfs on May 12, or 36.4% of average, down from last week when the river ran at 73.8 cfs and from 71.7% of average.
Rifle hit-and-run results in one death
GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KJCT) - A hit-and-run that occurred in Rifle on April 29th resulted in casualty. At 4:50 a.m. on April 29th, a hit-and-run occurred on the Rifle River bridge, which resulted din the loss of a pedestrians life. The suspect vehicle is believed to be a silver 2005 to 2010 Jeep Grand Cherokee, possibly with tinted windows. Witnesses report it was last seen heading Eastbound on I-70. This vehicle has significant front-end damage, with additional damage to the hood. Notably, the grill is painted silver, not chrome.

Obituary: Helen Aloaha Boor Dotson
Helen was born at home in Loma, Colorado to Charlie Margaret Thurmond Boor and Herbert Thomas Boor. She passed away at the Grand River Health Care Center in Rifle, Colorado, early in the morning on May Day at the age of 90. She was the oldest of three girls. Before she was school age, her family moved to a ranch outside Rifle. She and her sisters had a wonderful childhood growing up ranching, farming and riding. Like her dad, Helen always loved a team of mules. The year she graduated from Rifle Union High School, she met the love of her life at a neighbor’s ranch looking at new twin calves. Leslie Dotson, Jr., made her his wife November 2, 1952.

The Garfield County commissioners unanimously voted this week to appoint Myrna Fletchall of Rifle to the Garfield County Public Library District’s (GCPLD) board of trustees. The board is the library district’s governing body. Its members make decisions about the budget, building maintenance, raising funds, hiring and firing the library district director, and uphold the library’s policies, especially those surrounding the First Amendment and the free access to information for all.
