Dixie Cafe On The Courthouse Square In Byrdstown Is A Small-Town Tennessee Breakfast Stop

Some towns keep their best stories on the courthouse square, and Byrdstown is one of them. Up in the hills of north-central Tennessee, a little cafe opens its doors at 7 every morning except Sunday. The regulars wave hello to newcomers instead of staring at them. Friday and Saturday nights...

What’s New & What’s Next Downtown, Part 1: Restaurants & Retail

Downtown Knoxville has been keeping busy, and I’ve got a massive backlog of openings, announcements and developments to prove it. Time for a catch-up! Last week I again joined Compass Knox editor Scott Barker and co-founder Jesse Fox Mayshark on their Compass Points podcast to nerd out on all things downtown-ish. Naturally, I showed up with 10 FULL PAGES of notes about stuff happening in downtown proper alone. Since both hosts and producer Seth Barber failed to clear their next six hours for my monologue, I crammed what I could into a rapid-fire spoken word performance, confirming once and for all that I should stick to journalism.

This Kentucky Drive-In Shows Brand-New Movies For Less Than A Single Streaming Rental

First-run Hollywood movies, a burger topping bar, and blow-up slides for the kids, all at one Kentucky drive-in. That combination alone made me sit up a little straighter. The concession stand here gets talked about as much as the screen. Pizza, pulled pork sandwiches, milkshakes, and even funnel cake fries share the menu.

Four Decades of Rethinking Large-Format Tile at Crossville

Exactly how big is big? When it comes to large-format porcelain tile (LFT), the answer has been unclear for years. Crossville has been making oversized tile in its Tennessee manufacturing plant since it launched in 1986, when the definition of “large format” was pretty loose. Was it 8 square inches, 12-by-24-inch tiles, or something else?

Locals Swear by the Giant, Juicy Cheeseburgers at This No-Frills Tennessee Burger Joint

The burgers here are half-pound patties, hand-pattied and cooked fresh to order. That means you’ll wait around 20 minutes, and nobody seems to mind one bit. The dining room holds only a handful of tables. A few more sit outside on a back deck. The building is old, simple, and clean, which feels exactly right for a place this focused on food.

Forget the main course for a minute. In Tennessee, there’s a crispy, golden side dish that’s stealing the spotlight, and it’s worth hitting the road for. Grab a Plate and Dig Into Red-Eye Gravy at These 7 Tennessee Breakfast Spots

Red-eye gravy starts with salty country ham drippings and a splash of coffee. That’s it. No flour, no thickener, just a thin, smoky pour that somehow tastes like a family recipe. I love that a sauce this humble still shows up on breakfast menus across Tennessee. It cuts through...

Tucked Away in the Smoky Mountains, This Bakery Makes Cinnamon Rolls Worth the Scenic Drive

A cinnamon roll topped like strawberry shortcake sounds like breakfast and dessert shook hands and made a deal over coffee. I fully support that deal, and I suspect your sweet tooth does too. The same little bakery also tops rolls with apple pie filling, caramel and pecans, blueberries, and even...

Maryville Alcoa Animal Rescue Center Dog of the Week: SpongeBob

Readers may remember SpongeBob, the furriest little sponge that lived under the sea. He lived with his friends, Harry the dogfish and Patty, the dog shark. SpongeBob loved swimming in the ocean. He’d play hide-and-seek in sunken ships with slippery eels. When he caught them, he’d shake and shake, and toss them through the water. “Wheeee!” they’d cry. SpongeBob also loved sampling all the local fare, like crabs, lobsters, and oysters. One time he tried a mouthful of seaweed. “Blech,” he said, spitting it out. “I need something meatier.” He’d scratch a scratchy spot on the coral, and at night he’d use anemones as pillows, laying his little head in their soft tentacles. Life in the ocean was fun for little SpongeBob, but he had so much love to give and no one to give it to. After all, sharks aren’t exactly cuddly. So one day, he breached the surface and blew a stream of water into the air. “Look, a whale…wait a minute…” someone called from the shore. SpongeBob caught a wave and rode it all the way to the Maryville Alcoa Animal Center, where he now waits for his furever home. The perfect home for sweet eight-month-old SpongeBob
