REIDSVILLE, N.C. (WGHP) — A man who worked at a Piedmont Triad YMCA is facing charges.

Zachary Tyson Highsmith, 24, of Rocky Mount, worked at the Reidsville YMCA from August 2023 to April 2024, when the YMCA said they were made aware of allegations against him and suspended him, later terminating him.

He was charged with indecent liberties with a minor and taken into custody on Thursday in Mecklenburg County.

YMCA made a statement on the allegations against Highsmith:

We were deeply saddened and disturbed to recently learn of allegations that violated our child protection policy against an individual associated with Youth Sports. When this was reported to us, we immediately suspended his employment and reported it to the local authorities. The former employee in question has since been terminated. Our thoughts and prayers are with the child and family.

All background checks on this staff member came back clean –he had no previous record or any other cause for concern in their background, nor did he have any disciplinary issues while working at the YMCA of Greensboro.
