Asheville and the surrounding Western North Carolina region woke to rain this morning, Thursday, Nov. 5, but the National Weather Service expects slightly more pleasant conditions this weekend. Light rain was reported early in the morning on Nov. 5 throughout Asheville by the weather service. Now, patchy fog is expected to clear after 11 a.m., leading into partly sunny weather forecast for the rest of the day with a daytime high of about 76 degrees that will drop to a low of 50 overnight, accompanied by mostly cloudy weather. Despite the somewhat gray day, things are expected to lighten up this weekend. But the weather service has also predicted some very cold temperatures two nights in a row. Coastal Storm and Snow Talk Grows for Atlanta, Charlotte, Raleigh and the Mid Atlantic as AI Models Show a Deep Upper Low, but Forecasters Warn It Is Too Early

CHARLOTTE, NORTH CAROLINA — Talk of a possible East Coast storm, and even snow, is spreading online as forecast models show a powerful system near the Southeast around Friday night into Saturday, November 13 and 14. The European AI model (AIFS) shows a deep upper-level low centered near north Georgia and the western Carolinas. Several of its runs also show low pressure forming along the Mid-Atlantic or Carolina coast. Forecasters say people should not buy the “snow dump” forecasts circulating on social media yet. The storm is still about a week away, and the model runs disagree on where the low will track and how strong it will be. The best advice for now is to keep monitoring.

RALEIGH, NORTH CAROLINA — Tornadoes are possible across the Carolinas and southeast Virginia on Friday, November 6, and some forecasters say this setup could overperform. The Storm Prediction Center has outlined only a 2 percent tornado risk, but forecasters see a good chance for tornadoes in a zone covering central and eastern North Carolina and central South Carolina. That includes Raleigh, Fayetteville, New Bern, Wilmington and Columbia. A strong tornado can’t be ruled out.
