Darkness falls across the land

Many folks up late on Halloween in Walsenburg and elsewhere in the region were suddenly plunged into darkness Halloween night when San Isabel Electric suffered an outage. SIEA spokesperson Paris Daugherty explained, “The power outage began shortly after 10:30 p.m. and affected roughly 1,700 meters, including the City of Walsenburg and meters up into the Gardner area. A piece of equipment in the Walsenburg substation failed. Responding line-workers located the piece of substation equipment that failed; they bypassed it, and restored power to the substation. Meters started restoring shortly after 11:30 p.m.” Daugherty added, “the numbers that our outage map displays are typically inflated, especially outside of business hours, because of the way signals come in from the meters and how they’re received at signal collection points. There were no outages in Pueblo County or south of Aguilar.”

Colorado State University has agreed to pay President Amy Parsons $1.1 million for her resignation, the Coloradoan learned through an open-records request. Parsons formally announced her resignation Oct. 28 , six days after she and CSU System Chancellor Tony Frank signed a resignation settlement that requires the payment to Parsons be made, “minus any necessary withholdings,” by no later than Jan. 5, 2027. Parsons’ resignation will become effective Dec. 31, 2026, according to terms agreed to in the settlement that amended the five-year contract she signed when she was hired that would have continued through Jan. 31, 2028. Her annual salary is $686,238, according to the university's online compensation report . The settlement releases Parsons, Frank and the CSU System and its Board of Governors from any obligations that were contained in her original employment agreement. "The terms of President Parsons’ agreement reflect the remainder of her contract, which ran through January 2028, plus the equivalent of five months of salary in recognition of her significant achievements and long-term service to CSU," according to a statement from the CSU System that was shared with the Coloradoan by spokesperson Tiana Kennedy after this story's initial publication.
