Vehicle crashes into Honesdale-area bagel shop

A car crashed into Vinny's Original Brooklyn Bagels at 1114 Texas Palmyra Highway, Honesdale, in Texas Township on the morning of Nov. 6. Businesspeople in the vicinity had no reports of injuries. The shop is located along Route 6 in a shopping plaza owned by The Alpine. Photos posted online following the crash show a Honda most of the way inside the shop, having broken through a picture window. There was general disarray inside from the crash. Mark Eifert, one of the owners of The Alpine, went to the scene. He said as far as he was aware, no one was hurt. A tow truck removed the car, and the window was later boarded up. The crash of a vehicle into the bagel shop follows a similar incident in which a vehicle smashed into Belmont Café at 249 Belmont St., Waymart, on the afternoon of Oct. 31. No one was hurt in that incident, a post on the café’s Facebook page indicates. The café was not open at the time. Honesdale council approves contract for property code enforcement

After a gap in having a regular property code enforcement officer, Honesdale Borough Council on Oct. 26 approved entering into a contract with Northeast Inspection Consultants (NEIC) to conduct this service. The vote was 6-0; Councilor James Brennan was absent. In June, the council contracted with NEIC for zoning and property maintenance and building code enforcement, but due to an oversight did not include a code enforcement officer, said Councilor James Hamill, who chairs the Zoning and Code Enforcement Committee. He said he stepped into this committee role a couple months ago. The committee and borough staff have been very active in addressing needs and fielding complaints and concerns from the public, Hamill said. “I’m really starting to understand what the highest priority needs are in the community. Chief among them is code enforcement. Finally, tonight after some persistence we are getting code enforcement. That is huge for a volume of issues; there are a lot of people in need of making sure that the codes that are on the books are enforced,” Hamill said. Amanda Gravine, deputy open records officer, told the Tri-County Independent that since July, NEIC has been helping the borough with code enforcement when asked, although

Man accused of stalking Lycoming County woman, posting her intimate images

Williamsport, Pa. — A Scranton man is accused of contacting a woman about 250 times, including posting intimate images of her online and sending one to her employer, according to court documents. John Joseph King, 28, allegedly made the contacts through phone calls, texts, voicemails, emails, canceled Cash App transactions, and social media posts, tags, and messages between November 2025 and August this year, according to Detective David Fizzano of the Lycoming County District Attorney’s Office. King was charged May 28 for violating the protection from abuse order by sending harassing messages, according to court documents. Some of the messages allegedly referenced suicide, according to court documents. “I’m going to kill myself on your birthday,” one read. Another read, “I promise you, [the victim], I won’t be alive much longer.” King allegedly used blocked and unknown phone numbers, and the aliases Daniel Benson, Joel Benton, Itsame, and Mike Smith to reach the woman, according to Fizzano. He also allegedly created social media profiles impersonating the woman and used them to post intimate images of her alongside sexually explicit, degrading captions written as if in her voice, according to court documents. Honesdale football falls to Valley View in District 2 quarterfinals

HONESDALE — A season that began with so much promise has come to a heartbreaking end for the Honesdale football team. On Friday, Nov. 6, the Hornets hosted Valley View in their first-ever District 2 home playoff game. But sadly for an overflow crowd at the Daniel J. O’Neill Sports Complex, the visiting Cougars simply had too many offensive weapons. Despite big plays from Gabe Duda, Abe Bryant, Jacob Ramos and Dontae Joseph, Honesdale suffered a 42-21 loss in the District 2 quarterfinals. Valley View scored in every quarter en route to the upset, thanks in large part to stellar performances from quarterback Colin Dempsey, wideout Cash Roe and running back Ben Evans. More: Honesdale football honored with prestigious sportsmanship award Also by Kevin Edwards: Wallenpaupack Area football suffers Homecoming loss to Scranton Prep “No matter what, I'm incredibly proud of these kids,” an emotionally drained head coach George Howanitz said just moments after his Hornets lost “They played their hearts out for four quarters and never gave up. This is definitely a tough loss, especially for our seniors, but they have nothing to hang their heads about. They left it all out there on the field.” With the win,

Scranton man accused of brutal assault at Monroe County hookah lounge

A Scranton man is accused of beating up a man in Middle Smithfield Township so severely that it resulted in him going blind in one eye. According to the criminal complaint, Pennsylvania State Police troopers were dispatched to Sky 745 Hookah Lounge on Milford Road on Sept. 13 at 3:15 a.m. on the report of a fight in progress. When troopers got there, everyone involved had left. Upon viewing the surveillance footage, investigators determined that the victim was talking with Deshaun M. Lipscomb, 34, when the latter punched him. After the victim fell backward, Lipscomb punched and kicked him as other individuals surrounded them. While attempting to help him up, the victim’s wife was punched in the face by Lipscomb as well, the complaint said. At St. Luke's Monroe Campus, where the victim was initially taken, his wife told troopers that she as she tried to get the victim into her car, Lipscomb attacked again. From St. Luke's, the victim was taken to a hospital in Philadelphia via helicopter as he sustained “major eye damage which required multiple surgeries.” The complaint, filed on Oct. 4, said that the victim still did not have vision in the damaged eye.
