The note of warning sounded by the Journal a couple of weeks ago to be on the lookout for the bad check man was not taken seriously. Since that time, one of our merchants got stung for $50 by a man calling himself Fred V. Ross.

Ross was apparently an innocent-looking ranch hand, somewhere between 20 and 30 years of age, dark complexion and would weigh about 160 pounds. There was nothing in his looks that would arouse a suspicion of crookedness. He was to all outward appearances a laborer. He made the acquaintance of Mr. Huff, the automobile man, and Huff introduced him to some of our businessmen.

Foster & Hyde didn't have the change to spare at the time so the Prineville Mercantile Co. received a call. Ross Robinson, the manager, never questioned the genuineness of the check.

Two convicted criminals, who escaped from the state penitentiary in Salem early Sunday, were apprehended here Monday afternoon by Chief of Police Earl Shaw and returned to Salem Tuesday.

Chief Shaw reported noticing a car stalled at Third and Main about 2:30 Monday afternoon.

"The two men in the car acted suspicious," Shaw said, "so I followed them after they fixed the car. They tried to shake me when we got in front of the courthouse but finally stopped their car at Fourth and Belknap. Both claimed ownership of the car, then said they had borrowed it in Eugene."

Chief Shaw placed a call to Eugene but before it was completed, the two men admitted that they had stolen the car in Sheridan.

"A call was placed to McMinnville, and the sheriff said the two men were still serving time, and it was then I knew that they were the escaped convicts," Chief Shaw said.

The escapees first drove to Newport and back through Salem to Eugene, where they hid out Monday night near the McKenzie River, Chief Shaw said. Monday morning, they resumed their trip and arrived in Prineville in the early afternoon. Warden George Alexander and two guards took the men back to Salem Tuesday afternoon.

Warden Alexander reported Tuesday that both convicts have been assigned to isolation cells where they will remain for an indefinite period. The convicts told the warden "they didn't know why they escaped." Bradley is serving three years for larceny in Lane County and Neyman three years from Washington county.

The Prineville City Council voted to increase swimming rates by 42% Tuesday evening.

The increase, recommended by the Parks and Recreation Department, was passed by a vote of 6-1 with Mayor Allen, council members Bannon, Brick, Giovanini, Thompson and Simmons supporting the measure. Council member Jerry Blank cast the lone dissenting vote.

Hugh Dragich, Parks Director, requested the increase due to the increase in chemicals and other supplies needed for operation of the city's pool. It was stated by Dragich that the pool has never operated at a profit, and this increase will not change that.

The increase will change rates for children from 35 cents to 50 cents and youth from 50 cents to 75 cents. The season family pass will be discontinued. The Parks Department will have a ten-swim ticket with a reduction of 20% for its purchase.

Councilman Jerry Blank said, "It is too high an increase for one year. It will, without a doubt, force some children out.

Acting on information, Crook County sheriff's deputies made two arrests last weekend and recovered three high-end recreation vehicles that had been reported stolen.

A sheriff's deputy said the department had been informed that a fifth-wheel trailer was parked on a ranch in the Lone Pine area. Thursday morning, law officers flew over the site and confirmed the presence of an RV that had been reported stolen from a Salem dealership last October.

With permission from the ranch owner, deputies approached the RV, which was not inhabited. Evidence found inside indicated that a couple had been living there.
