Pedestrian Accident Involving Minors Occurs at Pony Express Trail Crosswalk. Five minors were airlifted to a hospital after being struck by a full-sized van in a pedestrian accident on May 31. The accident occurred near a hardware store on Pony Express Trail near Willow Street around 10:42 a.m. as the minors were crossing the street. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) reported that the driver of the van remained at the scene, and neither drugs nor alcohol appeared to factor into the cause of the accident.

Two arrested with 12 pounds of fentanyl pills sentenced to 8 years in prison
Two Auburn men were sentenced to eight years, three in custody and five on strict mandatory supervision, on May 3 for transporting fentanyl into Placer County. Brigido Simon Lopez Beltran, 28, and Joaquin Mardueno, 33, were arrested Aug. 29, 2022, following a traffic stop in the area of Interstate 80 and Maple Street area of Auburn where K-9 Ruger alerted to the driver’s side of the car. Five packages - lined with foil, vacuum-sealed with plastic and each containing 10,000 fentanyl pills (or fentapills) - were revealed, along with other items, during the search of the vehicle and both defendants’ persons.
Children struck on Pony Express
Five children were injured after being hit by a van while crossing Pony Express Trail in Pollock Pines Wednesday morning. Pollock Pines resident Steven Pickering said he was leaving a nearby dentist office when he saw an appliance repair service van run into a group of children crossing the street around 10:30 a.m. He said one child was knocked out of their shoes when they were hit.

Search and Rescue needs help to Fill the Pack
When hikers lose their way, skiers become trapped in the backcountry or children get lost in neighborhoods or the woods, the El Dorado County Search and Rescue Team is called on to assist. The 146 volunteers assist at emergencies and events, and also devote time to continual training and skill improvement; in 2022 alone, Search and Rescue members contributed 10,751 volunteer hours, according to Scott Bare from the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office.
Injury Accident Involving Horse Trailer Occurs in Auburn
State Route 48 Injury Accident Traps Driver in Vehicle. An injury accident occurred in North Auburn on May 26 when a vehicle flipped over a horse trailer and overturned. The crash happened around 5:00 p.m. at the El Dorado confluence of California State Routes 48 and 193 in front of the quarry. An injured party traveling with a dog was trapped inside the vehicle, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), and a passerby was trying to get the occupant out.
