WEST PITTSTON, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — The northern lights are scattering the skies of NEPA.

Just after 10:00 p.m. Friday night, images of the northern lights were captured by Digital Executive Producer Tim Haberski in the South West sky over West Pittston.

Haberski states, that the northern lights can be visible to the naked eye but are enhanced once a camera is placed on them.

According to NASA, when Earth’s magnetic field sends particles to the North and South Poles those particles interact with nitrogen and oxygen creating auroras known as the northern lights.

Officials explained states like Canada and Alaska have the best chance of seeing the northern lights, however, Pennsylvania was one of the 17 states that may have been able to catch a glimpse of it.

In minor geomagnetic storms, the northern lights can be in Maine and Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, however, in extreme storms, they can be visible as far as Florida and Southern Texas.
