Budget concerns grow as diesel prices surge in Wisconsin
CHIPPEWA FALLS — The Chippewa Falls Fire & EMS Department routinely handles about 260 calls for service each month. It’s a lot of driving, without a lot of ways to save on gas. Fire & EMS Chief Brian Tonnancour said there isn’t much they can do about spiking diesel prices, which have reached $6.62 per gallon on average in the state, according to AAA. One year ago, the average diesel price in Wisconsin was $3.51 per gallon. The city’s four ambulances and three main fire trucks all run on diesel. “This is higher than we ever really expected,” Tonnancour said Tuesday morning. “We’re cognizant of it; we’re paying attention to it. We just have to eat it, and be smart about not putting on any additional miles.” Tonnancour said all the vehicles in the city fleet fill up at the city shop on the south side of the Main Street bridge. “The whole city sits in the same boat,” Tonnancour said. Brandon Cesafsky, Chippewa Falls public works director, said the city has a 10,000-gallon diesel tank. At the end of August, they ordered 7,300 gallons at a cost of $4.50 per gallon, for a total cost of $32,879. “We usually

The $168 Train Journey Across Wisconsin That Travelers Can’t Stop Raving About
The appeal of crossing Wisconsin by train lies in the way the day unfolds. Milwaukee’s railway approaches give way to smaller communities, open farmland, and a slower sequence of stations. By the time you reach La Crosse, the state has become a series of places you have moved through rather than exits you have passed at highway speed.

Weston weighs overnight parking ban on all streets this winter
Weston drivers would face a new overnight parking ban on every village street this winter under an ordinance change the Village Board will consider Monday. Current rules require alternate-side parking on all Weston streets from 4 a.m. to 4 p.m. during the winter. The proposal would instead bar parking on all streets from 2 a.m. to 7 a.m., Oct. 31 through May 1. According to a memo from Public Works Director Michael Wodalski, the Police Department requested the change to match neighboring communities.
