    Husband charged over stabbing deaths of wife and mother-in-law found in Philadelphia basement

    A man has been charged with the stabbing deaths of his wife and mother-in-law who were found dead in a Philadelphia basement. Police were alerted to a person with a gun at around 1.30pm on Tuesday, May 21.

    Emergency services rushed to the 6000 block of Bingham Street where they found Alma Barberena, 58, and her mother, Angela Trejo, 75, knifed to death in the basement.

    Alma had gone to the home to help her parents with a telemedicine appointment, Philadelphia Police Staff Inspector Ernest Ransom shared during a Thursday morning press conference .

    Leandro Barberena, Alma's husband, 43, called 911 to say he found his wife and her mother stabbed in the basement. Alma had defensive wounds to her hands and arms, and her husband also had scratches and cuts on his hands .

    A bloodied glove was also found at the scene . A matching glove was found inside Leandro's vehicle . Investigators concluded through a range of evidence that the women were stabbed between 11am-12pm on Tuesday.

    Leandro has been charged with two counts of murder , possession of an instrument of crime, tampering with evidence and obstruction of justice. Cops say they weren't previously alerted to a domestic incident at the home.
