PERRY POINT — An America Legion Department of Maryland program aimed at helping with veteran patient care across the state recently made an $8,000 donation, part of which will be used at Perry Point VA Medical Center.

VA facilities in Loch Raven, Baltimore, Cambridge and Pocomoke City, Md. will also share in the funds donated through the legion’s “Be The One” campaign.

“The continued support from the American Legion Department of Maryland makes it possible for us to enhance the services and programs we provide to veterans,” said Jonathan R. Eckman, director of the VA Maryland Health Care System. “It also sends an important message to our veteran patients that their service in the armed forces has not been forgotten.”

Among the items on which this money will be spent are: diversional recreation supplies and activities, transportation services, educational resources, adaptive sports programing, supplies for new and expecting mothers, and equipment for inpatient care units.

RISING SUN — The mayor and commissioners have agreed to sell several former police department vehicles in an effort to recoup some spent funds.

“We’re hoping to get a little bit of a return on our taxpayer’s dollars,” said Calvin Bonenberger, town administrator, while introducing Resolution 2024-06. Declaring the vehicles surplus property is the town’s legal avenue for disposing of unneeded items. The board approved the resolution Tuesday.

Rising Sun needs to wait 20 days after declaring the surplus property. Afterward they can take bids or sell them at public auction. The former patrol vehicles include a 2010 and 2011 Dodge Charger, a 2011 Ford Expedition, two 2016 Ford Interceptors and a 2019 Interceptor.

RISING SUN — Work is underway at what is becoming Rising Sun’s Community Building at the corner of East Main and Walnut Streets to replace and repaint aging windows and doors on what used to be Janes United Methodist Church.

Judy Melton, Rising Sun Assistant Town Administrator, said there are 70 windows to address along with several doors on the structure that was built in 1922. Janes UMC sold the building to Calvary Reformed Presbyterian Church in 2006. Rising Sun acquired the building in 2022. Because of the age of the building a professional contractor was hired to address the likely presence of lead-based paint. Melton said Colossal Contracting is certified to handle lead paint abatement.
