Alna selectmen rebuke resident’s remarks
A committee on Alna’s would-be mining ordinance drew about two hours’ discussion May 9 and an exchange over civility. The selectboard had just settled on most of the committee’s members and was mulling which selectman to have on it – Third Selectman Coreysha Stone or Second Selectman Steve Graham, and what that selectman’s role on the committee would be – when one of the other planned appointees, Jeff Spinney, called Stone stupid.

Getchell running for Dresden selectboard
Longtime Dresden resident Gary Getchell is running for selectboard. Getchell has already served Dresden in numerous ways. Upon retirement he immediately jumped into participating in the community as town moderator for three years and as Dresden’s School Board Chair for six. Concerned about transparency in governance, budgets, and town contracts, Getchell believes the time is right to serve again. “I have been on and headed committees where public interest was involved since the 1960s. I still have that desire to serve the ‘public interest’ and hope that Dresden voters will give me that opportunity on June’s ballot.”
Historical preservation and education grants for two Maine nonprofits
Maine’s First Ship and the Arnold Expedition Historical Society are two of the 121 nonprofit, cultural organizations across 29 states and the District of Columbia who will receive a total of $1.4 million dollars in grant funding for historic preservation and education projects from Americana Corner based in Alexandria, Virginia. The history-focused educational nonprofits are the only two Maine recipients of the 2024 Preserving America grant award.
Honoring Maine’s Blue Markers
Between the Boothbay Region High School playing fields and Townsend Avenue stands a Blue Star Marker. It was placed there by Boothbay Region Garden Club in 2010, and it rests in a pocket garden flanked by American flags and azaleas in full bloom. A red, white and blue wreath has been set beneath the marker by Linda Redman, Garden Club Federation of Maine’s Blue Star Marker chair, in recognition of Memorial Day.
