A man died Thursday after he tried to flag down passing traffic for help in Freeport.

The man apparently suffered a “medical event” and pulled over near mile marker 19 on the southbound side of Interstate 295 about 4:15 p.m., according to Shannon Moss, a spokesperson for the Maine Department of Public Safety.

He had a bloodied face, and attempted to flag down passing drivers, Moss said Thursday night.

A passing driver and first responders stopped to help him, performing CPR when he became unresponsive.

He died at the scene, Moss said.

The man’s body was taken to the Maine medical examiner’s office in Augusta, where an autopsy will be performed.

    Moss didn’t identify the man.

No additional information was immediately available.
