Like it or not, the frigid winds of winter will be blowing sleet and snow into Iowa at some point soon, and Iowans need to begin getting ready for all the season ahead may hold. Meteorologist Chad Hahn, at the National Weather Service, says today is Winter Weather Awareness Day.

There is a potential for frost in parts of Iowa tonight. National Weather Service meteorologist Alex Vorst says areas with clear skies could see frost. “The best locations for potentially seeing frost is going to be north, northern, northeastern Iowa where cloud cover looks to be largely minimized as we have this frontal boundary passing tonight,” Vorst says. He says frost is less likely under cloudy skies. “With the incoming boundary and the cloud cover, that will actually help insulate the surface a little bit, and areas where there are clear skies will be able to drop a little bit further temperature wise, be able to cool off temperature wise, and that’s where the frost will be possible,” he says. if you’re in northern Iowa, kind of northeastern Iowa, that’s where you better frost chances will exist.”
Temperatures could fall into the upper 20s tonight before a sharp warmup arrives Sunday.

A north-central Iowa farmer is reflecting on a smooth harvest. Josh Hitzhusen grows corn and soybeans near Rockwell. “Things went quite well. Corn dried down really fast again this year like it has in years past, which is wild because we sat here all September watching it rain and cool weather wondering if the corn would ever get dry enough to combine. And man, one weekend of 80-some degrees and we lost a lot of moisture fast.”

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa — A possible early-season polar vortex disruption has forecasters looking back at past winters for clues. The last strong El Niño winter with a November polar vortex disruption was 2009–2010. That winter turned out colder than expected, with December bringing bitterly cold conditions across much of the country. Based on that history, a quick start to winter looks possible this year.

MASON CITY — Weather has had an impact on the State Highway 122 project near MercyOne North Iowa Medical Center in Mason City. Pete Hjelmstad with the Iowa Department of Transportation says while the plan was to potentially have traffic open in one lane on both sides of the highway, that will be delayed. “They’re plugging away — they’re working on intersections and sidewalks, they are putting down some sod, there’s a retaining wall that needs to be done. So once they get that stuff done, that would affect the outside lanes. They hope to have that switched over to the outside lanes, and we’re still shooting for about Thanksgiving Day for an opening date, so we’ll keep pushing on that one. It’s been a little challenging right now, and looking at the forecast, it doesn’t look real promising right now, but like I said we’ll take what we get and keep moving forward.”
