WAVERLY, Iowa (KWWL) -- Waverly-Shell Rock (WSR) and Gilbert High Schools released a joint statement on Friday following an alleged inappropriate comment. A WSR representative told KWWL a Gilbert fan, who is a minor, made an inappropriate comment towards a minor WSR player at the boys' basketball game on Thursday night.

Cedar Falls Fire Captain Sherwood Mourned
Cedar Falls Public Safety is mourning the loss of Fire Captain Brad Sherwood. Sherwood, who was 56, died at his home in Grundy County on Friday. Captain Sherwood joined the Cedar Falls Fire Department as a volunteer firefighter in 1997. In 2001, he was hired as a firefighter, and he was promoted to the rank of Captain in 2009. Captain Sherwood served on all of the fire shifts over his decades of service, and he was the department’s subject matter expert in fire truck maintenance and firefighter protective gear. He received many awards and commendations throughout his career and he was honored as the Fire Department’s Fire Officer of the Year for 2015. The Grundy County Medical Examiner has ordered an autopsy to determine the cause of Sherwood’s death. He is survived by his family from Dike. Richardson Funeral Service in Cedar Falls is assisting the family.
Tower Resistance Could Slow Floyd County 911 Communications Project
Controversy over tower placement could slow down an estimated $5 million overhaul of Floyd County’s emergency communications system. Last July, the Board of Supervisors greenlit an upgrade to the County’s current 911 system, which has become too costly to constantly repair. Improvements would also get Floyd County on the statewide 911 ISICS system and improve emergency response efficiency.
Alcohol Compliance Checks
Cedar Falls Police performed I-Pledge compliance checks sponsored by the Iowa Alcoholic Beverages Division and caught three store clerks selling tobacco, alternative nicotine, or vape products to a minor. Underage undercover operatives supervised by police were sent in to a total of 41 stores to attempt to purchase products they were too young to buy. 37 year old Rahman Maqsood of Bani’s Liquor and Tobacco, 26 year old Vikash Vikash of Prime Mart, and 19 year old Alexia Downs of Panther Travel Center were all cited in the sting. Selling these products to minors carries a $135 fine for the first offense, $325 for the second, and $645 for the third or subsequent offense.
4th Quarter Comeback Keeps W-SR Alive
Thursday night on KWAY Country the 2nd ranked Waverly-Shell Rock boys basketball team won a thriller to advance to the Sub-State Final. The Go-Hawks were down 8 points to Gilbert going into the 4th quarter before fighting back to win 80-73. Noah Frazell led all scorers with 27 points in the victory.

Barn Heavily Damaged by Fire West of Charles City
A barn was heavily damaged by fire Tuesday (02.20) night just southwest of Charles City. Charles City Fire Rescue says they were paged to a structure fire on the 2600 block of 215th street shortly before 9 pm. Prior to arrival, they were advised that the structure was a barn with flames seen coming from inside.
Golf Course Open in Waverly
The Waverly Municipal Golf Course will be open until further notice. The golf course will be open daily with tee times running from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. All operations, including food and beverage sales, will run through the pro shop as the clubhouse remains closed at this time. The golf course does not yet have their carts for the season so until they arrive there will be no trail fees for those bringing their own carts. Carts are expected to be delivered in early March.
