Alison Brown wants to shed more light on banjo's history, diversity
Alison Brown performs at Belle Plaine's Bartlett Arboretum on Sunday, May 19. The singer, songwriter and banjo innovator is based in Nashville, where she recorded her 2023 album "On Banjo." It's the latest in a line of acclaimed outings from Brown and was released on the Compass label, which she and husband/bassist Garry West co-founded in the 1990s.
5A Softball Sub-State to air on KSAL
The 5A Softball Sub-State bracket hosted by Topeka Seaman High School Tuesday will air on 1150 KSAL and 106.7 FM in Salina, and online at KSAL.com. Salina South will open competition as the #6 seed in 5A West, against the #11 seed Arkansas City Bulldogs, in a rematch of a double-header from earlier in the season. The two teams split that competition in April. Action will begin at 3 PM from Topeka Seaman High School.
Oklahoma adding 'blue-collar, hardhat' wing in top JUCO prospect Jeff Nwankwo
A month ago, Jeff Nwankwo made the short, hourlong trek north from Arkansas City, Kansas, to Wichita, Kansas, to speak with a group of AAU teams. The junior college All-American, who became the newest member of Oklahoma's basketball program this week, met with the Wichita Padres to share his story, inspire and discuss his unorthodox journey to big-time college basketball — a path that began as a wide receiver at Tulane in 2021 before leading him to Cowley College and, at last, a Division-I opportunity on the hardwood. Over the course of his time speaking with the Padres, Nwankwo shared what has been the biggest lesson he learned over the last three years: the need to differentiate himself.
