Garfield County gives green light to $27,000 for local nonprofits
Garfield County Commissioners approved $27,000 in second-quarter discretionary grants for local nonprofits during the May 13 county commissioners meeting. In total, there were $33,000 requested in applications. The board of county commissioners had budgeted $120,000 for nonprofit discretionary grants for 2024, leaving $62,000 remaining for applications in the final two quarters of the year.

The Garfield County Sheriff’s Office said Tuesday that one of its detention facility officers was arrested on charges related to a domestic dispute. At approximately 3 p.m. Tuesday, deputies responded to “a call for a domestic dispute in progress” in the New Castle area, according to a GCSO news release issued just after 8 p.m.

May Click It or Ticket campaign to increase seat belt enforcement
Summer travel season typically sees an increase in traffic crashes across the state, according to a post from the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT). In response to the busy season, CDOT mobilizes a yearly seat belt enforcement campaign for 21 days in May called Click It or Ticket. Starting on May 13, the increased enforcement period is “the largest seat belt campaign of the year” according to CDOT. Last year, the mobilization enforcement yielded 1,554 seat belt violations.
