Third-quarter slump dooms Del Sol football in postseason debut

The first taste of playoff football for the Del Sol High football program was the bitterness of defeat. Montebello scored four second-half touchdowns — three in the third quarter — to snatch away the game, securing a 49-24 win over the Jaguars in a CIF-Southern Section Division 13 first-round game on Friday, Nov. 6, in north Oxnard. “Every game, we have had a nightmare quarter,” Del Sol head coach James Nelson said. “I told the coaches at halftime, ‘One of us is going to pull away.’ … Unfortunately for us, it was them.” It was the playoff debut for a program in its second varsity season, four years after opening its doors to students in 2023. Four-star junior college defensive end Hayden Lowe will visit Tennessee for the Vols' football game against Kentucky on Saturday, according to Greg Biggins of Rivals . The 6-foot-5, 255-pound prospect is from Westlake Village, California and plays for Long Beach City College in Long Beach, California. 247Sports ranks him as the No. 1 junior college defensive end in the class and No. 2 player junior college player in California. Lowe signed with Miami as a five-star prospect in the Hurricanes' 2025 recruiting class. He transferred to Long Beach City College in August. Tennessee offered Lowe a scholarship in high school on Dec. 12, 2023. As a junior college prospect, his first visit to Tennessee was for a football game against Auburn on Oct. 3. Other schools to offer Lowe as a junior college prospect include Alabama , California and Missouri. The high school regular season is over! Now the California Interscholastic Federation postseason brackets begin! The Southern Section, which makes up Ventura, Los Angeles, Orange County, San Gabriel Valley, and some parts of San Bernardino County, is the biggest competitive region in the state- one of the biggest sections in the country. There are 14 different brackets representing different levels of play. The Division 1 playoff features eight of the best teams in the country, highlighted by previous national champions St. John Bosco, Santa Margarita, Mater Dei, and Sierra Canyon. There are treasures of Division 1 talent playing in this playoff. I can't wait to break it all down. Those four matchups are scheduled for Friday, Nov. 13, one week after the other Southern Section divisions begin postseason play. Here's an early preview.
