The Toledo Department of Transportation announced various East Toledo road closures to make way for city projects. Consaul Street, between Bakewell Street and Birmingham Terrace, will be closed for a Safe Routes to School project Thursday and Friday. The street will reopen for the weekend and close again on Monday for three days. A detour will be established via Front and Wheeling streets in both directions. Nevada Street will be closed between White Street and Raymer Boulevard for a utility project starting Thursday and lasting three days. A detour will be established from White Street to Starr Avenue to Raymer Street in both directions. Oak Street, between Church and Nevada streets, has been closed since Monday for a utility repair project, and its completion has been extended to Saturday morning, the city said. A southbound detour has been established from Miami to Fassett streets. A northbound detour has also been established from Navarre Avenue to Woodville Road.

Oregon council to consider stop signs along Easthampton to improve safety
Oregon may be installing stop signs at several intersections along Easthampton Drive to improve safety. Rodney Shultz, deputy engineer in the city’s public service department, conducted a review of five intersections along Easthampton that determined the need to replace yield signs with stop signs. The matter will go before Oregon City Council on Monday. The intersections with Easthampton are at Cromwell, North Reach, Hazelton, Springtime, and Beachwood drives. “Stop signs at those intersections make sense for safety reasons,” Mayor Steven Salander said. Some residents have complained about the need for stop signs. “It is a potential danger in my neighborhood,” Lynn Gibbs, of Dogwood Drive, said at a recent council meeting. “We’re having a lot of close calls. I think stop signs should be on the crossroads on Easthampton because drivers are not paying attention to yield signs.” Councilman David Andrus said he had asked the public service department a couple months ago to review the intersections. The city evaluated existing traffic-control devices, traffic patterns, roadway characteristics, sight distance, pedestrian and bicycle activity, and crash history at those intersections, and determined there was a need for stop signs to replace the yield signs. “You would expect to see a clear

Road Warrior: U.S. 20A closes for next roundabout project
Detours in Monclova Township will increase in complexity Monday when U.S. 20A closes at Strayer Road for an Ohio Department of Transportation roundabout project. The route, also known there as Maumee-Western Road, will be closed for 60 days, and the official posted detour will use I-475/U.S. 23 and State Rt. 2 (Airport Highway) in both directions. Local roads will provide much shorter alternatives, but most of those are not authorized for large trucks and other commercial vehicles. U.S. 20A’s closing also ends its usefulness as an alternative route around the roundabout project on Monclova Road at Waterville-Monclova Road. Lucas County detoured that traffic south to Stitt and Russell roads and Technology Drive, and that’s now the best option. Salisbury Road between I-475/U.S. 23 and Albon Road is also available for smaller vehicles. Monclova Road is scheduled to reopen in mid-September. Until then, plan your route through that area to avoid excessive mileage. Farther west, the new roundabout on Monclova at Wilkins Road opened early last week. Still to come this season: a roundabout at Archbold-Whitehouse and Providence-Neapolis-Swanton roads. **** A resurfacing project has started on State Rt. 2 in western Ottawa County. Flag zones will occur at varying locations between

4 South Toledo streets to close for projects
Four South Toledo streets will be closed for varying lengths of time this week, the Toledo Department of Transportation announced. Glendale Avenue will be closed between South Glendale Avenue and Princeton Drive for about six days, starting Monday, for a mid-block Safe Routes to School crosswalk project. An eastbound detour will be posted via the Anthony Wayne Trail and Harvard Boulevard, and westbound traffic will be detoured via River Road, Sherwood Avenue, and the Trail. Schneider Road’s westbound lane will be closed Tuesday through Thursday at Heatherdowns Boulevard, also for a school-route crosswalk project. Its detour will be to Glendale between Detroit Avenue and Byrne Road. Nearby, eastbound Heatherdowns will be closed between Royal Haven Road and Cragmoor Avenue on Monday only for utility repairs. No detour route will be posted. Glanzman Road and Schneider are the two closest alternatives. And on Monday and Tuesday, parts of South Avenue’s eastbound lane east of Detroit will be closed. Roadway restoration will occur Monday and Tuesday between Toronto and Geneva avenues, with traffic detoured via Woodsdale Avenue and the Anthony Wayne Trail. Tree work will occur between Spencer Street and Hiett Avenue on Tuesday only, with traffic detoured via Spencer, Western Avenue,

To the editor: Roche de Boeuf span harmed by ODOT work
ODOT has neglected their historic Interurban Bridge since it was closed to motor vehicles in 1946. The lack of maintenance and resultant deterioration got so bad, they closed it to pedestrians in 1983. So, if ODOT was so negligent in their required maintenance procedures over the past 80 years, why aren’t they rehabilitating the bridge today? ODOT plans to pull down the walls this month. This will result in an ugly skeleton, not an artistic icon. It will have an adverse effect on the historic character of this first of its kind bridge built in 1908. It will waste gas-tax dollars on pulling down walls that can be structurally supported at a lower cost. This will deprive tourists of a majestic view of the Maumee rapids, the historic Council Rock and the site of the start of the Battle of Fallen Timbers. Most important, it will not finish the job to make it functional again, and so, it will risk the safety of children biking on the Buckeye Trail between Haskins and Waterville. Now ODOT has given the bridge to Waterville so that ODOT can shirk their moral and financial responsibility to make this bridge a pedestrian/bike bridge again and

Bus drivers observe rollover crash during safety demonstration
For Wendy Bula, seeing a re-enactment of what happened to her decades ago was jarring. “I remember it happening like it was yesterday,” Ms. Bula said. “It took me years to be able to ride a school bus again.” Ms. Bula, a substitute bus aide for Maumee schools, watched as a 2006 decommissioned Springfield school bus rolled over during a safety demonstration at Bubba's Heavy Duty Towing & Truck Repair in Monclova Township. Once the bus was rolled, the drivers and aides watched as firefighters approached the bus, observing how they would respond to a similar incident. Hosted by Springfield schools and the Springfield Township Fire Department, the rollover demonstration Wednesday was meant to show drivers what happens and how to prepare for similar crashes. “The drivers get to see what happens when a bus rolls over and what they can expect,” said Ryan Grooms, Springfield’s director of HR and operations. “Seeing something like this can change your perspective as a driver. Seeing it in person is 100 percent different from seeing it on video.” Once the bus was rolled over, drivers were invited to see the inside of the bus and where the mannequins ended up. ODOT’s posted restrictions indicate that both northbound and southbound U.S. 23 will be restricted to a single lane between 7:00 PM and 3:00 PM.
