Michigan's senator-elect, Abdul El-Sayed, this week joked that he is for "shawarma" not "Sharia" law, when speaking to reporters this week. "Do not believe the people who say I'm for Sharia law, I'm for shawarma law," El-Sayed said at a campaign stop in Macomb County. The joke made light of those who are concerned that El-Sayed, the first Muslim ever elected to the U.S. Senate, will force all Americans to adhere to the religious concepts of Islam, an accusation he has denied. El-Sayed during the conversation then recommended Detroit-area shawarma shop Amo Samis , which operates several locations throughout southeast Michigan. "I want to explain what the tenets of shawarma law are. If you get a shawarma and it's got lettuce in it, it's not shawarma, it's just a sandwich. Someone has lied to you," El-Sayed said on the food. Livonia's Yard House restaurant sets opening date

A second Yard House restaurant is opening in Metro Detroit this fall. At the former Bahama Breeze Island Grille on Haggerty Road, the new beer-centric restaurant will offer a massive draft beer selection and a large food menu. Highlights include pub grub, burgers, seafood, steaks and special menus for vegan diners and those with gluten sensitivities. The Livonia Yard House is set to open Dec. 7, according to the company's website. The brand opened a Yard House in Troy in late 2018. It touts the "world's largest selection of draft beer." It was founded in 1996 in California and now has around 100 locations in the United States. Yard House is part of the Darden restaurant group, which also owns Olive Garden, LongHorn Steakhouse, Ruth's Chris Steak House and the Capital Grille, which opened a Livonia location in June . Dead or trapped pests found at Garden City eatery

Recent health inspections in some Garden City restaurants found accumulations of insects on insect traps and more between September and October, according to Wayne County Health Department inspection reports. Many of the violations have been corrected. The presence of violations in a past inspection does not necessarily mean the establishment has the same violations today. Great China Garden, 32293 Ford Road During a routine inspection on September 18, an inspector noted several problems at Great China Garden. ∎ Observed two bottles of powdered lye for floor drain cleaning near the dishwashing area. The bottles of lye state that they are for industrial use only, and warnings on the manufacturer's label indicate to keep this product away from kitchens due to its poisonous and fatal nature if swallowed. Poisonous or toxic materials shall be used according to the manufacturer's directions included in labeling and, for a pesticide, the manufacturer's label instructions that state that use is allowed in a food establishment.
