Closures signal ills for Michigan's independent pharmacies

HAZEL PARK — One recent day, Matt Marinco filled a prescription for a patient's diabetes medication and lost nearly $133 on the transaction. The two-month supply cost the pharmacy $1,933.32, but insurance reimbursement totaled just $1,800.40. “Those losses are unsustainable,” said Marinco, pharmacist in charge at his family's Marinco Pharmacy, which has served Hazel Park for more than 80 years. Some pharmacists say the reimbursement issue has forced them out of business. Six independent pharmacies closed in Michigan in October, including four HomeTown Pharmacy locations and Fred's Pharmacies in Three Rivers and Vicksburg. HomeTown Pharmacy cited financial strain caused by pharmacy benefit managers' reimbursement practices as the main reason for the closure of an outlet near Muskegon and three in the Traverse City area. The closures are part of a broader trend. About 275 pharmacies closed statewide in 2024, including 91 independent outlets, according to the Michigan Pharmacists Association. Independent pharmacies across Michigan are facing mounting financial pressures, with owners saying PBM policies are making it increasingly difficult to stay afloat. Meanwhile, the PBM industry disputes that it is driving closures, saying pharmacies have ways to manage costs. At the same time, pharmacies are looking for ways to strengthen their

McLaren Port Huron acquires Northpointe OB/GYN to expand care

After years of declining access to obstetric and gynecological care in St. Clair County, McLaren Port Huron is working to rebuild the number of physicians serving local patients. The hospital acquired Northpointe OB/GYN in October 2026, the county's only full-service obstetrics and gynecology practice, with plans to recruit additional physicians and expand access to women's health care. The practice, now operating as McLaren Port Huron Obstetrics and Gynecology at 1206 Washington Ave., has four OB/GYN physicians and one nurse practitioner, compared with eight physicians who previously served the area through two practices. Dr. John Brooks, McLaren Port Huron's chief medical officer, said the hospital hopes to eventually restore the number of local OB/GYN physicians to approximately eight. "We just lost a lot of access," Brooks said, referring to physician departures in recent years. For patients seeking a new provider, however, access remains limited. Hannah Collins, office manager at McLaren Port Huron Obstetrics and Gynecology, said the practice is temporarily not accepting new patients while completing its transition to McLaren. The office expects to resume accepting new patients around January 2027, although the timeline is tentative. Existing patients will continue receiving care. Local obstetric care has declined over several years In

CosMedics Medical Aesthetics Clinic Reveals How Biostimulators Differ From Dermal Fillers

GRAND BLANC, MI - November 04, 2026 - PRESSADVANTAGE - Patients considering injectable facial treatment are often introduced to dermal fillers and biostimulators as if the two belong to one interchangeable class of products. They do not. Hyaluronic acid dermal fillers restore facial volume by adding material that occupies space at the time of treatment. Biostimulators are used to encourage the body’s own collagen production so structure, firmness, and contour change gradually rather than all at once.

LANSING, Mich. (News 10) - With Medicare Annual Enrollment running now through December 7, beneficiaries are encouraged to take a closer look at their coverage options for the upcoming year. Licensed, independent Medicare agent Debbie Stroup emphasizes that choosing the right plan involves far more than simply finding the lowest monthly premium. Instead, individuals need to evaluate critical details such as in-network doctors, covered prescriptions, preferred pharmacies, out-of-pocket costs, and overall healthcare needs. An annual policy review can uncover subtle plan adjustments that could make a significant difference in both medical access and expenses down the road.
