MSP Airport finds lack of interest in commercial spaces

Restaurant operators and retailers balked at the high asking rents and long lease terms that MSP Airport wanted as part of a large search for new tenants. Why it matters: MSP's reputation as the top U.S. airport is based partly on its dining and shopping options . The lack of vendor interest shows that it may be asking too much from businesses seeking access to the airport's 36 million annual travelers. State of play: The airport has been working on a major overhaul of its commercial spaces this year. Staff informed the Metropolitan Airports Commission (MAC) that it found vendors for less than half of the available space. By the numbers: In May, the MAC issued a request for proposals for about 40% of the restaurant and retail spaces in both terminals — 80,000 square feet in total. All of those spaces were bundled into 10 batches. Nobody responded to four of the batches and staff chose not to award deals to a group that was the only respondent on two others. Concessions brings in big bucks for the airport — it reported $250 million in revenue from rent collections last year. The intrigue: The airport had a long list

Seat Cover Solutions project takes another step forward

MONTICELLO — Plans for Seat Cover Solutions’ proposed $11 million headquarters and distribution center in Monticello took another step forward Oct. 26, as the City Council approved a preliminary plat for the development. The approval comes just two weeks after the council endorsed a revised state grant application for the fast-growing automotive accessories company, which recently doubled the size of its proposed facility from 55,000 to 110,000 square feet. The development is planned for approximately 11.6 acres in Otter Creek Business Park, where Seat Cover Solutions intends to consolidate its warehouse, distribution and office operations. The proposed building would include 18 loading docks and approximately 4,775 square feet of office space, with room for future office expansion. The facility is expected to accommodate approximately 40 employees. In a separate action Oct. 26, the council also approved removing existing drainage and utility easements to allow two parcels to be combined into one property for the development. Required easements will be reestablished as part of the new plat. The plans also call for a separate easement to protect an existing wood-chip trail connecting Chelsea Road to Bertram Chain of Lakes Regional Park. Stellis Health plans to join CentraCare in 2027

MONTICELLO — After 75 years as a physician-owned medical practice, Stellis Health is preparing to become part of CentraCare, a move that could bring changes to patient billing and insurance arrangements while opening the door to new investments in Monticello and Buffalo. The two organizations announced the proposed affiliation Oct. 21, saying Stellis physicians, advanced practice providers and employees would become part of the regional health system, which already operates CentraCare’s Monticello Hospital. Stellis shareholders have voted to move forward with the proposal, which remains subject to final agreements and required regulatory review and approval. The organizations are targeting Jan. 1, 2027, for the transition. For now, patients can continue seeing their current providers, and Stellis clinics will operate as usual. However, some billing and insurance arrangements could change following the affiliation, Stellis leaders acknowledged in written responses to questions from the Monticello Times. “As part of the planned affiliation, some billing and insurance arrangements may change,” Stellis CEO Brent Wilde and President Dr. Frank Anderson said in their joint responses. “Those details are still being worked through, and it would be premature to speculate about the specific impact on individual patients.” They said affordability remains a priority and pledged

St. Michael declares Shop Small Week, talks Jamison Avenue Corridor

The St. Michael City Council declared Shop Small Week and approved a feasibility report for the Jamison Avenue Corridor extension at its meeting on Oct. 27. Discover STMA The City Council approved a resolution proclaiming Nov. 23-28 as Shop Small Week. The resolution was brought forward by Discover STMA, which is an organization that promotes local businesses in the St. Michael-Albertville area. President of Discover STMA Courtney Wiest said local businesses would receive Shop Small success kits if they registered, and they would receive ideas of how they could promote their businesses. She also said Discover STMA would use a “pop-up” method to help businesses without physical locations advertise their services. “Want to make sure all businesses in the community have the opportunity to participate, even if they don’t have a brick and mortar spot,” Wiest said. She said that businesses with enough space would host other businesses to do pop-up shops. “If we get a lot and they don’t have anywhere to go, we will find a space,” Wiest said. Another item Discover STMA is planning is to host a window-decorating contest for businesses with a prize, Wiest said. As for customers, Wiest said Discover STMA will have an
