Piggly Wiggly returns to Augusta, replacing Harvey's
The Pig has returned to Augusta; Piggly Wiggly grocery store that is. Piggly Wiggly opened last week in the Southgate shopping center at 1631 Gordon Highway at the corner of Tubman Home Road in the same space that had been Harveys Supermarket. The new owner of the franchised location did not immediately return a request for an interview last week. On a recent visit, the store was busy with shoppers. The manager said the new owner, whom he did not name, was able to keep all of the Harvey employees. In Sandersville, a Piggly Wiggly opened on Harris Street on Feb. 12. There is also a Piggly Wiggly in Wagener, S.C. To see a store locator, visit www.pigglywiggly.com/store-locations/georgia . Piggly Wiggly was started in 1916 in Memphis, Tenn., by Clarence Saunders and was professed to be the first true self-service grocery store. "In grocery stores of that time, shoppers presented their orders to clerks who then gathered the goods from the store shelves," according to the Piggly Wiggly corporate website. "Saunders, a dynamic and innovative man, noticed that this method resulted in wasted time and expense, so he came up with an unheard-of solution that would revolutionize the entire grocery

Augusta Eats: La Casa Latina brings diverse Latin flavors to Augusta
There's a sign on the front desk at the entrance of La Casa Latina written in large neon lighting, that reads "Omi casa es tu casa," which translates into English as "My house is your house." That's how Mary Carroz and her husband Frank want guests to feel when they come to the restaurant and Latin grocery they've owned and operated for more than nine years on Lumpkin Road. The Carrozs met in Augusta, but both are originally from Venezuela and came to the United States before they met. They have two children, both students at the University of Georgia. Originally, they bought just the grocery store in 2011. When the adjoining space next door became available, they quickly scooped it up, tore out part of the wall between the businesses, and opened the restaurant, she said. They wanted their restaurant to be a Latin experience, not just Venezuelan. So, they enlisted the help of friends from many Latin countries to teach them the culture and how to prepare their native dishes, she said. "A friend from Puerto Rico taught me all about Puerto Rican food," Mary Carroz said. Other members of the local Hispanic community did the same. From

Augusta Eats: Towne Center Tavern brings scratch kitchen to Evans
Towne Center Tavern has that vibe that makes you glad you walked in. Laid back, tables filled with people talking and laughing, servers scurrying by with plates loaded with good-looking food, big screen TVs scattered about, and a really nice host named Brooke who is just fine that you're there to write a story. Welcome to Towne Center Tavern, located in the heart of Evans Towne Center in a cool space with an outdoor porch where you can bring your dog and enjoy a drink and a meal. Come on Thursday for a rousing night of Trivia. Towne Center Tavern opened in April by long-time local restaurateurs Shawn and Katy Ledford, who have operated Mellow Mushroom pizza restaurants in Augusta and Evans since 2002. The space had been occupied by Stay Social Tap and Table, which closed in late 2022. The menu is generous, but not overwhelming. There are the typical American classic and bar-type foods: wings, sandwiches, salads, nachos, burgers, and fish-and-chips. And there are the more elevated entrees, such as the house-smoked BBQ plate, the house-smoked meatloaf, and the Cajun pasta, or appetizers like crispy brussels sprouts with feta cheese, lemon zest, and a balsamic drizzle, voodoo shrimp,
