Stalled rainmaker over Florida floods Polk County streets and yards

Having an umbrella handy was not just a good idea this morning — forecasters say a Super El Nino could bring more frequent low-pressure systems that generate more than usual rainfall into the winter. Most of Polk County was under a flood advisory until 11:15 a.m. on Nov. 2 as wide areas of rain covered Florida, especially south of Interstate 4, according to the National Weather Center in Ruskin. Overnight, a stalled low-pressure system picked up moisture from the Atlantic Ocean and dumped as much as 6 inches of rain per hour in some parts of Polk County as it crossed the peninsula on its way to the Gulf of Mexico, said NWS meteorologist Stephen Shiveley. Several inches of rain blamed for localized deluges and flooded roads In Polk County, the deluge was especially felt in rural areas surrounding Indian Lake Estates and Lake Wales, he said. A weather cell dumped 5-6 inches of rain there. Closer to Lakeland, the NWS received a report that Swindell Road experienced flooding, Shiveley said. He said the heaviest rainfall amounts were west of downtown Lakeland at about 3.5 inches. The NWS had issued a flood advisory for the area including Lakeland to Plant
