Hampden County District Attorney addresses rising crime rates

LUDLOW, Mass. (WWLP) – The Hampden County District Attorney held his 7th annual pasta dinner fundraiser for his election campaign. While we were there, we caught up with the DA to discuss the current state of crime in Hampden County.

According to DA Anthony Gulluni, there is typically an increase in crime during warmer weather, with more activity and parties leading to a spike in OUIs. Gulluni also mentioned that there has been a rise in violent crimes, specifically gun-related and assault.

He says that these types of crimes are more common in inner city environments like Springfield. This event comes after two separate homicide investigations in the city, one involving the arrest of a 14-year-old.

“We’ve always got additional resources for this time of year. We’re having those discussions, making sure we are doing all the right things, focusing on offenders that are problematic and making sure they don’t get back out on our streets,” said Gulluni.

Gulluni says they’ll be working with State Police and other local departments to take preventative measures.
