Bedford Airport celebrates 30 years of service

BEDFORD COUNTY, Pa. (WTAJ) — Over the past 30 years, the Bedford Airport has become extremely important and valuable to residents so on Thursday, they decided to celebrate.

Despite not offering commercial use, everyone in attendance recognized how valuable the airport has been to the economy in Bedford County and surrounding areas. It’s even allowed business owners the ability to operate multiple businesses across the East Coast.

Over the last 100 years, there have been four different airports in the county, but none have lasted other than this one.

Thomas McInroy, the Chair of the Airport Authority in Bedford County, said even though the relationship between the airport and the county has grown in the past three decades, they’re just getting started.

“Our industrial parks are full. And that’s great news for our economic development here with the county and this airport provides family-sustaining wages,” McInroy said. “This airport is heavily used by the business and industry people here.”

Sen. Pat Stefano, of the 32nd District, was also in attendance Thursday.

“It’s a momentous occasion. As we sit here this is our first 30 years and we have our second thirty years coming in the blink of an eye,” Stefano said. “But we’ve seen the airport grow the last 100 years now in different locations.”

McInroy said they have big plans for the airport in the future, including being able to offer commercial service to larger airports across the Commonwealth.
