VIGO COUNTY, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) – On Monday, a school bus crash in western Vigo County that sent several children and the bus driver to the hospital could have been far worse.

With downed power lines and other dangers around them, first responders and school officials worked together to keep everyone safe. Coordinator of Safety and Security for the Vigo County School Corporation Kurt Brinegar said that this turned out to be a best-case scenario.

“As soon as we got the kids off the bus it was minutes later that we got to reunite those kids once they were examined by the medical people, we got them to where they needed to be,” Brinegar said.

Brinegar added that this would not have been possible without everyone on scene doing exactly what they needed to.

“Police rely on the fire department, fire relies on the police, the police rely on the medics, the medics rely on the fire department, everybody works together and getting that relief that everyone is just doing their job and they did it very well,” he said.

He said that the safety of students will always be priority one.

“The huge relief once those kids were off the bus, triaged, and okay,” he said. “I could then successfully say to the parents that your child is okay, they may be hurting, but they are okay, and they will be coming home. That is a huge relief.”

School corporation officials said that the none of the kids involved were admitted into the hospital, with the majority of them going to school Tuesday.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation. The bus driver was treated at a hospital but has been released.
