May 12-18 is National Police Week and Peace Officers Memorial Day in 2024 and the Itasca County Board authorized a resolution at their county board meeting on Tuesday, May 7, recognizing the work and sacrifice of our local officers. The resolution proclaimed the week of May 12-18 to be Police Week and “call upon all our citizens—as well as our patriotic, civic, and educational organizations to honor, commemorate, and show appreciation for our law enforcement officers, past and present, who, by their faithful and loyal devotion to their responsibilities, have rendered dedicated services to their communities and, in so doing, have established for themselves an enviable and enduring reputation for preserving the rights and security of all citizens.”

Additionally, the resolution calls upon “All citizens of Itasca County to observe the 15th of May 2024, as Peace Officers Memorial Day, in honor of those law enforcement officers who, through their courageous deeds, made the ultimate sacrifice and service to their community or have become disabled in the performance of duty, and let us recognize and pay respect to the survivors of our fallen heroes.

An additional resolution was passed to recognize our local correctional officers and county probation office during National Correctional Officers Week during May 5-11.

It officially recognizes corrections officers for their bravery, service and sacrifice, stating: “Corrections Officers face incredibly challenging and dangerous working conditions every single day. Corrections Officers work long hours away from home due to chronic short staffing and pandemics, which make their jobs even more difficult, but they do it to keep our communities and our families safe.”

Itasca County Commissioner Terry Snyder (D2) commended all of our emergency responders for putting their “lives and souls into the job.”
