LOOKOUT, WV (WVNS) – A tornado struck Fayette County in April of 2024. Storm clean-up has been in progress in the areas affected by the storm. In response to the damage, dumpsters were dispersed into the damaged areas for clean-up.

People affected by the tornado were still in the process of recovering from the severe damage on May 6, 2024.

Tarps were used to cover holes in roofs, trees were knocked down, and some houses were knocked off their foundation.

The Fayette County Solid Waste Authority and Litter Control partnered to provide dumpsters for cleaning up. 54 dumpsters were provided for residents to throw away storm debris.

Dan Helton, Litter Control Officer for Fayette County, said the push for the clean-up has been community driven.

“It’s been a community effort. A lot of stand up members in the community and local first responders came together and kind of got a grasp on the clean up and seen this thing through. Again, our hearts go out to the people impacted there,” said Helton.

Most of the trash that was thrown away was household debris such as bricks, wood, and furniture.

Helton said hazardous materials are not to be thrown in the dumpsters.

“They’ve been going to residences that were impacted first and foremost. I just know rule of thumb is no liquids or any hazardous materials like that. Anything with freon they set aside to sort,” said Helton to 59News.

The dumpsters provided are just one way residents affected by the tornado were helped. They were used by many free of charge to help heal communities in Fayette County.
