LONDON, Ky. ( FOX 56 ) — A London Wal-Mart associate has been honored by the FBI and the London Police Department for his role in ending a multi-state theft crew targeting Walmart stores.

According to a news release from London police, the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the London Police Department held a ceremony for Jake Benge for helping to end a series of thefts by a crew from eastern Europe who were performing large-scale thefts at stores across multiple stores for months.

According to the news release, Benge was tracking “look-out” alerts from other Kentucky Walmart stores. That tracking helped him recognize the crew when they entered the London Walmart and led to an arrest by the London Police Department.

The main subject was identified through fingerprint biometrics and was connected to multiple other unsolved theft cases, immigration crimes, and federal investigations, according to the release.

Authorities said the crew employed a variety of scams, including cash exchange, gift cards, and fraudulent item returns, and would target multiple stores per day before traveling across multiple states to elude law enforcement.

“The London Police Department was honored to be part of recognizing a local Wal-Mart Associate. Wal-Mart and its associates have always had an amazing working relationship with our department. Without their assistance and their associates willingness to help in not just matters pertaining to Wal-Mart, we would not be as successful as we are,” the London Police Department wrote in a statement.
