BOONE COUNTY, Ky. ( FOX 56 ) — Two people were charged after a child was hospitalized on Monday in Boone County.

The Boone County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release that 60-year-old Darlene Schloss and her brother, 63-year-old Stephen R. Troxell, were babysitting Schloss’s 4-year-old granddaughter when she ate a THC gummy. The next day, the 4-year-old was still unconscious.

The sheriff’s office said Schloss called her daughter, the child’s aunt, and admitted that the child had eaten the gummy and wouldn’t wake up.

The aunt called the authorities and reported a medical emergency.

According to the news release, deputies reported that the child was breathing but had a “gray facial expression.” Emergency medical services took the child to Cincinnati Children’s Hospital.

Schloss and Troxell were both at the home when authorities arrived and allegedly told deputies that Troxell bought the gummy from a local store and stored it in an unsecured location in a room the child was staying in.

Schloss allegedly told deputies she didn’t report the incident because Troxell said if law enforcement were notified of the situation, the child would be taken away, according to the release.

Schloss and Troxell were charged with one count each of first-degree wanton endangerment and endangering the welfare of a minor following the incident.

The Boone County Sheriff’s Office Crime Suppression Unit said they are investigating possible packaging and labeling violations at the store Troxell allegedly bought the gummy from.
