ANDERSON COUNTY, Tenn. (WATE) — Educators at Anderson County Schools will not be among those in Tennessee allowed to carry concealed firearms in schools after the governor signed a bill allowing teachers to carry.

Tennessee lawmakers passed it in a 68-28 vote in favor of the bill and sent it to Governor Bill Lee, who signed it on April 26. The law, brought by Cookeville Republican Ryan Williams , permits teachers to carry concealed handguns on school campuses if they meet certain requirements . The requirements include 40 hours of handgun training, written authorization from the school’s principal and local law enforcement, and a handgun carry permit.

A statement shared by ACS reads, “In light of recent changes to Tennessee state law regarding concealed carry on school premises, Anderson County Schools wishes to address the public and press regarding our stance on this matter. While it is true that the state law permits teachers to conceal carry while on school grounds, Anderson County Schools has made the decision not to allow this practice within our educational institutions. Our primary concern remains the safety and well-being of our students, staff, and visitors.”

The statement goes on to say that the school believes that the responsibility of concealed carry could detract teachers from their primary duty and may introduce unnecessary risks. The school system adds that they trust their school resource officers and the Anderson County Sheriff’s Office to keep their schools safe.

“It is imperative to recognize that the issue of school safety extends far beyond the capabilities of individual teachers. It requires a collaborative effort involving trained security personnel, diligent administration, and community support. Anderson County Schools is committed to upholding the highest standards of safety and security for all those who pass through our doors.”

Previously, Oak Ridge Schools shared that they would not be allowing teachers to carry concealed firearms in schools . Jefferson County Schools shared that they would not immediately change any policy or procedure allowing staff to begin carrying a gun. Knox County Schools Superintendent Jon Rysewyk told WATE that they did not need legislation to focus on safety.
