Patricia Cherry, center, was recently honored with the Driver of the Year Award by the North Carolina Public Transportation Association.

Sampson County Public Transportation bus operator Patricia Cherry has been honored with the Driver of the Year Award by the North Carolina Public Transportation Association (NCPTA). The award, presented by David Rhew, the executive director of NCPTA, recognizes Cherry’s outstanding contributions to public transportation services.

Cherry, a full-time operator for Sampson County Public Transportation, started her career with the organization in 2007 and has since become an indispensable member of that team. Her commitment to professionalism and exceptional service has made her a beloved figure among her colleagues and passengers, county officials said.

Reflecting on her role as a bus operator, Cherry expressed her passion for transportation.

“The reason I love my job in transportation is because I enjoy meeting new people and helping those we serve,” she said. “Some days, I might be the only person a rider sees or talks to during the day. I was raised to be kind, respectful, and to lend a helping hand, and sometimes, that smile is worth more than anything. Over the years, I have met many people who love to ride transportation, and to get a chance to be around someone who enjoys picking them up, having a good conversation, and providing a safe ride, especially for the elderly, means a lot to me.”

Sampson County Public Transportation provides public transportation services Monday through Friday for trips to local agencies, medical appointments, shopping trips and the community college within Sampson County. Limited services are also available for out-of-county medical appointments.

Rosemarie Mobley, director of Sampson County Public Transportation, expressed gratitude for Cherry’s contributions.

“We at Sampson County Public Transportation are fortunate to have Patricia as a member of our team. Her outgoing personality and dedication to those we serve are evident in every interaction she has.” Mobley added. “Patricia’s warm demeanor creates a welcoming atmosphere for both our staff and passengers alike. She consistently goes above and beyond to ensure that every individual’s needs are met, demonstrating a deep commitment to providing excellent service.

“Patricia’s passion for her work shines through, inspiring others and making her an invaluable asset to our organization.”
