DA: Century III Mall owners have to deal with asbestos issue

Demolition of Century III Mall will involve asbestos remediation in the majority of the abandoned structure and the District Attorney is getting involved.

The first phase of demolition for the Century III Mall began on March 26.

A full asbestos survey of the mall has not been completed.

Allegheny County District Attorney Stephen A. Zappala says they're making progress on the mall and asbestos was to be expected.

“I understand there’s some asbestos and there’s a report that may indicate that there’s asbestos in the mall,” said Zappala. “We kind of anticipated that because of the timeframe and the nature of the prior uses of the property.”

Zappala said his office plans to ask the court to force the owners of Century III Mall to produce a contract to address asbestos on the property.
