PENNSYLVANIA (WTAJ) – Residents in Blair and Cameron Counties that are in need of a smoke alarm are being offered free installation of one, courtesy of the American Red Cross.

This spring, volunteers and members of the Red Cross will team up with community partners to install free smoke alarms for local families during the organization’s Sound the Alarm event across Pennsylvania.

“A working smoke alarm can be the difference between survival and tragedy when a home fire strikes,” CEO of the American Red Cross of Greater Pennsylvania Jorge Martinez said. “That’s why the Red Cross is teaming up with our community partners to help ensure neighbors have these lifesaving devices.”

There will be two separate events held:

  • Emporium Sound the Alarm will take place Saturday, April 27 from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. starting at the Emporium Volunteer Fire Department.
  • Tyrone Sound the Alarm will take place Thursday, May 2 from 3p.m. to 6 p.m. starting at Neptune Fire Company.

Those looking to schedule an appointment for a free smoke alarm installation for either event are asked to call 833-315-0882.

The Red Cross is also looking for volunteers to help with the installations. No prior experience is needed and training will be provided for installing smoke alarms and sharing fire safety information, according to the Red Cross. You can register to volunteer for both the Emporium and Tyrone Sound the Alarm events online. Volunteers under 18 must have consent from a parent or legal guardian to participate.
